This is a pair of auto extension tubes which fit between your SLR camera and lens for extra close focusing (macro) shots, up to 1:1 (life size) or even better. They're suitable for Nikon pre-AI 35mm SLR cameras and lenses inclsuing many early Nikon and Nikkormat models, and can be used on some AI, AF and digital SLRs, with some metering and lens restrictions - please see the Compatibility Information section below.
Two tubes are supplied - 20mm and 36mm deep, and they can be used singly or together. The longer the extension used, the closer you'll get. With a 50mm standard lens, the full set will get you to greater than 1:1 (actually 1.12x life size). This is slightly better than most dedicated macro lenses, filling the frame with a subject as small as 21x32mm (0.8x1.2 inches) on film, and is ideal for photographing many small objects such as coins, stamps, insects, etc. Even greater magnification is available with wider angle lenses. Longer lenses offer lower magnification, but more comfortable working distances.
The tubes retain the fully automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering of the original pre-AI camera and lens combination (where appropriate), so are fast and easy to use, with no extra manual procedures required. Compatible with metered manual on most pre-AI cameras where available, aperture priority auto exposure on the Nikkormat EL and ELw, and usable on some later models with metering restrictions (see below). TTL metering systems will take care of the required exposure correction automatically. These independent Vivitar auto extension tubes are very solidly made (in Japan) with metal barrels and mounts, and a high standard of fit and finish. They will not disgrace your camera outfit.
An excellent close up accessory for early Nikon users!
Condition: Excellent+++ (8.5/10)
The tubes are in very good condition and fully working order (checked on our pre-AI, AI, AF and digital cameras, with pre-AI and AI lenses). All couplings work correctly, though this type of extension tube can be tricky to mount - it's easy enough once you get the hang of it, rotating the forks to the correct positions and holding the tubes by the serrated grips only. Cosmetically the tubes show only normal signs of use with some surface marks here and there, plus some minor paint wear on the bayonet mounts where they've been fitted.
No dents, dings or deep scratches, and overall they're in nice shape!

Compatibility
These extension tubes are designed for older (pre-AI) Nikon SLR cameras such as the F, FT, FTn, F2, F2S, F2SB and Nikkormat FT, FTn, FT2, EL and ELw, with auto diaphragm full aperture metering where appropriate, with pre-AI lenses, or AI types with a meter coupling fork. They also fit the unmetered Nikkorex F and original Nikon-mount Ricoh Singlex.
Usable with restrictions on Nikon AI manual focus cameras such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FM3A, FA, FM10, FE10, EL2, F2A, F2AS, F3, F3HP and Nikkormat FT3. Compatible with pre-AI, AI and some AF lenses (those with aperture rings), using automatic diaphragm and stopped down metering. Not suitable for lenses that have no aperture rings, such as Nikkor G types.
Usable with manual focus and exposure/metering restrictions on many AF and digital SLRs (usually manual and aperture priority, no matrix, stopped down metering), including the Nikon F-801 (N8008), F-801s (N8008s), F90, F90x, F100, F3AF, F4, F5, F6, the digital D1, D1H, D1X, D2H, D2HS, D2X, D2Xs, D3, D3X, D3S, D200, D300, D300s, D7000 and D700, plus some other early Nikon-mount digital SLR cameras. Compatible with pre-AI, AI and some AF lenses (those with aperture rings), using automatic diaphragm and stopped down metering. Not suitable for lenses that have no aperture rings, such as Nikkor G and DX types.
Many modern Nikon SLR cameras don't support metering with manual lenses. This includes models such as the Nikon F-401 (N4004) series, F50 (N50), F55 (N55), F60 (N60), F65 (N65), F75 (N75) and F80 (N80), APS Pronea S and 600i, or the digital Nikon D40, D40X, D50, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D100, Kodak DCS 315, DCS 330, DCS Pro 14n, Pro SLR/n and Fujifilm S-1, S-2 Pro and S3 Pro. Even with these cameras the tubes will fit and work properly, but you'll have to work out the exposure yourself. Compatible with pre-AI, AI and some AF lenses (those with aperture rings). Not suitable for lenses that have no aperture rings, such as Nikkor G and DX types.
Nikon-fit extension tubes like this can be used on many other types of camera using adapters (not included), with Nikon pre-AI, AI and many AF types as above. Suitable cameras include Canon EOS, Olympus, Panasonic and Leica Four Thirds (4/3) and Micro Four Thirds (MFT), Samsung NX and Sony NEX. Not suitable for digital lenses.
