Tamron is one of the top independent lens manufacturers, and this is an auto focus zoom lens with a very wide range, aspherical optical design and multicoated glass. It's suitable for all Canon EOS 35mm, APS and digital SLR cameras (see below), and is in good condition with lens hood and caps.

The extremely useful zoom range covering 28mm and 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard, 70mm and 100mm portrait plus 135mm and 200mm telephoto, plus of course all the focal lengths in between. The diagonal angle of view is 75 to 13 degrees on film or full frame digital cameras. For many people this will be the only lens you need to carry for general photography.

It's also ideal for Canon EOS digital SLRs, where it gives an effective focal length range of 45-320mm (1.6x models such as the EOS 600D, 7D, Digital Rebels) and 36-260mm (EOS 1D models). Full frame coverage on the EOS 1DS, 1DX and 5D cameras, plus Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c. On EOS APS cameras the effective focal length range is around 35-250mm.

Automatic or manual focusing on EOS AF cameras, and manual focus on the EF-M. The closest focusing distance varies with the zoom setting, down to 0.52m (21 inches) from the image plane. This gives a macro reproduction ratio of up to 1:4.8 (slightly better than one fifth life size), filling the frame with a subject as small as 115x173mm (4.8x7.2 inches) on film, and even smaller on most digital cameras. Compatible with all exposure and metering modes, with aperture settings controlled from the cameras as normal for EOS lenses. Maximum aperture is f/3.8-5.6, and the lens stops down to f/22-32 for maximum depth of field.

The optical design uses 16 elements in 14 groups, with one or more aspherical surfaces for optimum quality. Multicoated (MC) glass to reduce flare and increase contrast and colour fidelity. Standard 72mm thread for filters and other accessories, plus external bayonet mount for a lens hood (model D5FH, supplied), which reduces the chance of flare even further, and reverses over the front of the lens for storage.

Despite the long zoom range the lens measures just 85mm (3.4 inches) long on the camera at its smallest settings, and weighs only around 470g. It's nicely made (in Japan) with a metal lens mount, smooth controls and a discreet dark grey finish with rubber grips on the zoom and focus controls. Tamron model 171D.

An extremely useful AF superzoom lens for Canon EOS film and digital users!

The lens is in good condition and fully working order, with the zoom and manual focus controls working reasonably smoothly with a little play. The diaphragm stops down smartly and is free of oil, and AF works well. The glass is very clean with no scratches, misting, fungus or other problems, but just some specks of dust and other tiny marks as usual, which won't affect the results at all. Cosmetically it has a smooth dark grey finish, clean paintwork and only normal signs of use, including some surface scratches and scrapes here and there, mainly on the control rings. The accessories are in good condition.

No cracks, splits or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged, and overall it's in good shape!

Canon EF lenses and accessories do not fit the FD or FL manual focus cameras, EX models, or any other make.

Some earlier independent lenses don't work on newer EOS cameras, but we've tested this one on a recent EOS 50D digital, and it works perfectly.
