Chinon was a quality camera and lens brand, and this is a Japanese wide angle lens for Pentax, Praktica and other M42 screw mount SLR cameras, plus many other bayonet, AF and digital models using extra adapters (not included - see below). It's in generally very good condition (though the diaphragm only operates properly in manual mode - see the Condition section below for more details), and comes with lens caps.
35mm was for many years the most common wide angle focal length, and these days many people use it as a standard lens - it's very popular for landscape and reportage work. It provides greater coverage than the more usual 50mm lens, but isn't so wide that curvilinear or perspective distortion become objectionable. The diagonal angle of view is around 63 degrees on film or full frame digital cameras.
On most suitable digital cameras (adapters not included - see below) the effective focal length is increased to around 52mm (Konica Minolta, Sony Alpha and NEX, Pentax DSLR, Samsung GX and NX), 56mm (most Canon EOS with 1.6x crop factor), 59mm (most Sigma SD), 70mm (Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds) or 192mm (Pentax Q). Some Olympus and Pentax cameras offer a shake reduction feature with manual lenses, after setting the focal length manually.
Close focusing down to 0.5m (20 inches) with distances clearly marked in feet and meters, plus a depth of field scale and infrared index. The focusing ring has a patterned rubber grip for secure handling. The lens originally had an automamatic diaphragm, but this no longer operates correctly due to some oil on the blades. A manual diaphragm switch is provided, and this works with stopped down metering on suitable M42 screw cameras, or use on manual cameras, adapters (see below) or other accessories. Maximum aperture is f/2.8 and apertures stop down to f/22 for maximum depth of field (around 1m/3 feet to infinity), with half stops from f/4 to f/16.
The glass is coated to reduce flare against the light. Standard 55mm filter thread which does not rotate when focusing, making the lens much easier to use with polarizing, graduated and square filters and other accessories. The lens is compact and lightweight at only around 55mm (2.2 inches) long on the camera at infinity, and approximately 245g. It's very well constructed (in Japan) with a solid, metal barrel and lens mount, smooth controls, clear markings in multiple colours and a high standard of fit and finish.
A nice little lens for Pentax and other M42 screw users and collectors!
Condition: Excellent+++ (8.5/10), manual diaphragm only
The controls work quite smoothly, the aperture ring clicks positively at each setting and the manual switch works positively. The diaphragm shows signs of oil, and the blades open and close too slowly for correct exposure in auto mode. Manual mode works fine, though, and the price has been reduced considerably to reflect this defect. The aperture is slightly misshapen at smaller settings, but this will have little effect on the pictures, with just a different shape to some out of focus highlights. The glass is very clean with no scratches, misting, fungus or other problems, but just some specks of dust and other tiny marks as usual, which won't affect the pictures at all. Cosmetically, the finish is smooth with just some surface marks here and there, plus some paint wear on the rear mount where it's been fitted to a camera. The JCII "Passed" quality control sticker is still in place, and the caps are in good condition.
No dents, dings or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged, and overall it's in nice shape!
