This is a great flash for users of the classic Canon manual focus SLR cameras, with dedicated, auto or manual operation, plus a tilting head for bounce flash. Dedicated auto operation on Canon A and T series models such as the A-1, AE-1, T70, T90 and others, with flash ready indication shown in the viewfinder of suitable cameras, plus auto setting of shutter speeds and/or apertures (see below). It can be used on EOS models with restrictions (no dedicated operation), and works perfectly on many digital cameras with a standard hot shoe including popular Fujifilm and Panasonic models such as the S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR, HS10, FZ30 and others - see below. The flash is in very good condition with case, wide angle diffuser and new batteries.

The bounce flash head tilts upwards for more even, natural lighting, with positive click stops at 60, 75 and 90 degrees. The auto sensor still points forwards, so exposure can be determined automatically with bounce flash. The flash covers lenses down to 35mm, and an extra wide angle diffuser is supplied for 28mm and 24mm lenses (or the equivalent on other formats).

Fully automatic exposure control, with three auto ranges plus manual operation. The auto modes give ranges of 5 to 33 feet (1.5 to 12m), 3.5 to 16 feet (1 to 6m) and 1.5 to 8 feet (0.5 to 2.5m) at f/2.8, f/5.6 and f/11 with ISO 100 film. On suitable cameras (see below) the aperture selected is transferred to the camera automatically. On others you set it manually. Thyristor circuitry provides faster recycling at closer distances in auto modes.

Manual mode gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 56 feet (17m) with 50mm f/1.8 lens and ISO 100 film, and double this range with ISO 400. As usual, actual range will depend on the conditions. Slow sync switch allows the camera to use a shutter speed slower than the normal auto one of 1/60th with the Canon A-1, which lets you balance the flash exposure for the foreground with a long exposure for the background. Powerful guide number 30 (meters) and 100 (feet) with ISO 100 film. Film speeds can be set from ISO 25 to 800. Ready light/test button provided. Auto check light confirms correct exposure after test or exposure. Comprehensive control dial on the rear can be illuminated for use in low light - handy for a flashgun.

The flash is very well made (in Japan), with high quality materials, clear markings and a good standard of fit and finish, as you'd expect from Canon. Standard hot shoe fitting, with locking lever for secure mounting. Takes 4x standard AA batteries including disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd and NiMH types. Socket for external power supply (not included).

A classic flash for classic Canon cameras, and many others!

The flash is in fully working order and very good condition, with just the usual signs of use including some surface marks here and there (mainly around the hot shoe and base), and it smells slightly musty. The battery insert has a couple of very small pieces of plastic missing but this has no effect on operation, and the contacts are slightly marked but work fine. The accessories are in good condition. No cracks, splits or other damage, and overall it's in good shape! At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.

Compatibility
This flash is compatible with all Canon manual focus SLR cameras (and others) with a hot shoe, as follows:

It can set shutter speed and aperture automatically on the Canon AE-1, AE-1 Program, A-1, T50, T70, T80 and T90 (not suitable for TTL flash modes). Also works on the F-1N ("New F-1"), but a motor drive or winder is required to set the aperture automatically. It can set the shutter speed automatically on the Canon AT-1, AV-1 and AL-1. The aperture must be set manually to match that set on the flash with these models.

It can also be used on non-dedicated SLRs (such as the T60, FT, FTb, FTbN, EF, TLb, TX and similar models) plus other cameras with a standard (non-dedicated) hot shoe fitting, in auto or manual flash modes with shutter speed and aperture set manually.

Canon EOS film and digital SLRs
FD flash units like this one are not fully compatible with Canon EOS or digital cameras or the manual EF-M, which use a completely different dedicated flash control system. However, it will work with shutter speed and aperture set manually on the camera, and the flash controlling its output depending on the distance. The trigger voltage is very low at under 6v, which should be suitable for all cameras.

Other cameras including digital
This flash is not recommended for other makes of camera with dedicated flash features, but it will work on non-dedicated cameras with a standard (single contact) hot shoe. This includes popular digital cameras such as the Fujifilm S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR, HS10, S7000, S602 and Pro, S20 Pro, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ10, FZ20 and FZ30, etc. The trigger voltage is very low and safe at around 6v (the ISO 10330 standard is 24v, and even the most voltage-intolerant models accept up to 6v).
