Vivitar was one of the top accessory brands, and this is an excellent TTL auto bounce zoom AF flashgun for the original Minolta AF SLR cameras with a standard flash shoe - the 5000 AF, 7000 AF and 9000 AF (but not Dynax, Maxxum, Alpha or any digital models - see below). It's in good condition, and comes with batteries.
The bounce flash head tilts 90 degrees and swivels 270 degrees for bounce flash in horizontal or vertical positions, giving much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Zoom facility for lenses from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 85mm (and longer) telephoto. This gives longer range with telephoto lenses, and better coverage with wide angles.
Powerful guide numbers of 42m (136 feet) at 85mm, 36m (117ft) at 50mm, 30m (97 feet) at 35mm and 25m (81 feet) at 28mm with ISO 100. Theoretical maximum range is up to 25.7m (85 feet) with ISO 100 and 50mm f/1.4 lens. Greater range is available with faster film and longer lenses but as with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. TTL (Through The Lens) automatic exposure system for extremely accurate exposures. Works automatically in all exposure modes, including Program. Thyristor circuitry for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. Manual and low power modes also provided. Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required.
Comprehensive control panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 1.5 to 15m (6 to 50 feet), apertures from f/1.4 to f/32 and film speeds from ISO 50 to 1000. Ready light provided, plus auto check light (and switchable audio signal) confirms correct exposure after the shot has been taken. This Vivitar 636AF flashgun is very nicely made (in Japan), yet weighs only around 300g (without batteries). Powered by 4x standard AA batteries including disposable alkaline (supplied) or NiCd and NiMH rechargeable types. Captive battery compartment cover which can't easily be dropped or lost. Locking shoe fitting for secure mounting.
An excellent flash for early Minolta AF users and collectors!
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
The flash is in fully working order, and has been checked on our Minolta camera. Cosmetically it's in good condition with just the usual signs of use, including some surface scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish (mainly on the AF illuminator). The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion. No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in good shape! At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.
Includes 4x Alkaline batteries
