This is an excellent flash unit for most Canon EOS film cameras (but not the 300x or any digital models - see below). It has a bounce, swivel and zoom head, twin flashes and has a low (safe) trigger voltage. It's in good condition, supplied with 4x AA batteries.

The bounce/swivel flash head tilts up to 90 degrees and swivels over 330 degrees for bounce flash in vertical or horizontal positions. Bounce flash gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. It can also tilt down slightly to avoid missing the subject when taking close up pictures, but watch that the lens doesn't get in the way. A secondary flash tube is built in which fills in the shadows when bounce flash is used, and this can be switched on or off as desired. A zoom flash head adjusts for wide angle (35mm), normal (50mm), tele (85mm) and long tele (135mm and longer) lenses.

Powerful Guide numbers of 40m/130ft (tele 2), 34m/110ft (tele), 28m/91ft (normal) and 24m/78ft (wide) at ISO 100. Theoretical maximum range of up to 20m (66 feet) with ISO 100 and standard f/1.4 lens, but as with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. A comprehensive control panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 1.4 to 40 meters and 5 to 132 feet, apertures from f/2 to f/22 and film speeds from ASA (ISO) 64 to 1600.

TTL (Through The Lens) flash control system for extremely accurate exposures. Works automatically in all exposure modes including program, setting the shutter speed and/or aperture as required. Automatic fill-in flash in daylight. Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required on suitable cameras - not all models can activate this feature.

This independent flashgun is nicely made, around 145mm (5.75 inches) tall and weighs only around 315g without batteries. At the time of listing we have two available (A Carena 301AF and a Jessop 300 AF-CA), but they're the same design and the description here is representative of both of them. Power is supplied by 4x standard disposable alkaline AA batteries (included). Locking collar provided on the hot shoe for secure mounting.

An excellent flash unit for most Canon EOS film users!

Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
The flash is in fully working order (checked on our EOS cameras), all controls work positively, and the head moves positively with little play. Cosmetically it shows the usual signs of use with some scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish, but no cracks, splits or other damage. The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion, though a small piece of plastic is missing from the battery cover (this means it's slightly loose when empty, but holds securely when loaded with batteries).

Overall, it's in good shape! Please note that at the time of listing we have more than one of this item (branded either Jessop or Carena), but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.

Compatible with almost all Canon EOS 35mm cameras including the EOS 1, 1V, 1V HS, 1N, 1N RS, 5, 3, RT, 100, 10, 30, 33, 50, 50E, 55QD, 300, 300V (not 300X), 500, 500N, 600, 620, 630, 650, 700, 750, 850, 1000, 1000F, 1000N, 1000FN, 3000, 3000N, 3000V and 5000, plus the equivalent Rebel, Elan and Kiss models and many others. Also works with the APS EOS IX and IX-7 (IX Lite) models, but NOT the EOS 300X (Rebel T2, Kiss 7) - see below.

Most independent flash units like this one are NOT suitable for any EOS digital cameras, or the EOS 300X (EOS Rebel T2, EOS Kiss 7). These use a completely different E-TTL dedicated flash system, and you need Canon's own EX series flash units, or the latest independent flash units with E-TTL from independent makers which are specifically stated to be digital compatible. Not suitable for Canon manual focus cameras, the EF-M or any other make.
