This is a handy little auto bounce zoom flashgun for most film and digital cameras with a standard hot shoe, including most film SLRs and many popular Fujifilm and Panasonic digital models (see below). It's in good used condition, and comes with 28mm extra wide angle diffuser, plus batteries.
The bounce flash head tilts up to 90 degrees for bounce flash, which gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. The zoom head adjusts for wide angle (35mm), normal (50mm) and telephoto (85mm and longer) lenses, giving wider coverage or greater range as appropriate. An extra wide angle diffuser is supplied for even greater coverage with 28mm wide angle lenses, or the equivalent on other formats.
Useful guide numbers are 34m (110ft) at the tele setting, 30m (100 feet) at standard, 25m (84 feet) at wide angle and 16m (56 feet) using the extra wide adapter, with ISO 100. This gives a theoretical maximum range of around 27m (57 feet) at ISO 100 with a 50mm f/1.7 lens, and even further at higher ISO settings. As with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions.
Two auto exposure modes are available giving ranges of up to 11.5m (37 feet) at f/2.8, or 8m (26 feet) at f/4 with ISO 100, at the telephoto setting. Full manual option provided. Thyristor circuitry used in auto modes for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. Comprehensive control panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 1.3 to 20m (4.2 to 66 feet), apertures from f/1.4 to f/22 and film speeds from ISO 25 to 1000 and DIN 15 to 31. A ready light and test button are provided, and an auto check light confirms correct exposure.
This independent Hanimex TZ238 flashgun is nicely made, quite compact at around 120mm (4.75 inches) tall on the camera and weighs only around 240g (without batteries). Power is provided by 4x standard disposable alkaline AA batteries (included). Standard hot shoe fitting with locking ring for secure mounting, and the electrical contact is retracted when the ring is in the unlocked position. Please note that this was originally a multi-dedicated flash, but the extra pins have been removed by a previous user.
An excellent flash for many film and digital camera users!
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
The flash is in good condition and fully working order. All controls work positively, and it's been tested on our film and digital cameras. Cosmetically it shows some surface scratches and and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are slightly marked (not corroded) but have been cleaned and work fine. The diffuser is in good condition.
No cracks or splits, and overall it's in good shape!

NOTE: Many older flashguns have high trigger voltages - sometimes hundreds of volts - which can theoretically damage modern electronic cameras. We've tested this flash and it has a low trigger voltage of 6.4v, which should be suitable for most cameras. This is within the ISO 10330 standard of 24v, and only some cameras (particularly budget Canon EOS) specify lower voltages of up to 6v. If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment.
