This is an excellent flash unit suitable for the earliest Pentax SF range of AF SLR cameras (see below for full list), but not other models. It's compact and lightweight, dedicated with full TTL flash exposure control, and has an AF illuminator for focusing in low light.

The flash head tilts up to 90 degrees for bounce flash, which gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Zoom flash head is adjustable for 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard and 85mm (or longer) telephoto. This gives greater coverage with wide angles, and longer range with telephotos lenses. A 28mm diffuser is supplied for wider angle lenses.

Guide number varies with the zoom setting, from 17 to 34m (56 to 112 feet) with ISO 100 film. Theoretical maximum range of around 41m (134 feet) with ISO 400 film and 50mm f/1.7 lens, but as with all flashguns actual range will depend on the conditions. The control panel on the top of the flash provides distances up to 17m (57 feet), zoom settings from 35-85mm (switching to 28mm when the diffuser is attached), apertures from f/1.4 to f/22 and film speeds from ISO 25 to 1000 (DIN 15 to 31). Ready light, plus Auto check light confirms correct exposure after the shot has been taken.

TTL (Through The Lens) automatic exposure system for extremely accurate exposures. Sets shutter speed and/or aperture automatically depending on exposure mode. Automatic fill-in flash in daylight on compatible cameras. Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required.

This independent Sakar 717AF flash is nicely made, around 115mm (4.5 inches) tall and weighs only 225g (without batteries). Takes 4x standard AA batteries, and disposable alkaline types are recommended (supplied).

We've acquired a batch of these flash units from a shop clearance and they seem to be unused, though some of the boxes are slightly distressed. Cosmetically they're in excellent condition and fully working order, with all features and controls working properly. The battery contacts are clean and show no signs of corrosion, the instructions are complete and overall it looks as good as new!

COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
Suitable for the first SF range of Pentax AF SLR cameras ONLY - the SFX, SFXn, SF1, SF1n, SF7 and SF10.

NOT suitable for later Pentax AF cameras such as the Z, PZ, MZ, ZX or *ist ranges. Although the fitting and contacts appear the same, Pentax made some changes to the dedicated flash system on these cameras, and many earlier independent flash units don't work on these models. NOT suitable for Pentax digital cameras, manual focus models, or any other makes.
