This is an excellent zoom lens from Canon for many of the company's manual focus cameras such as the A-1, AE-1, T70 and T90 (see the full list below), and adapters are available for EOS and other digital cameras with restrictions. It's compact and lightweight, in good condition, and comes with Canon front and rear lens caps.
The 35-70mm zoom range is ideal for general use, covering everything from 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 70mm short telephoto/portraits, and of course everything in between. It's the ideal range to keep on your camera at all times, and is great for landscapes, travelling, holidays, family pictures, portraits and many more subjects.
Canon FD fit lenses can be used on the Panasonic Lumix G, Olympus Pen and other Micro Four Thirds, Pentax Q, Ricoh GXR Mount A12, Samsung NX and Sony NEX digital cameras with suitable adapters (not included). They work with manual focusing (simple using Live View on the camera's EVF and/or LCD), and manual diaphragm, in manual and aperture priority auto exposure modes. The effective focal lengths are increased because of the smaller sensors, which gives this lens a field of view equivalent to 70-140mm (MFT), 192.5-385mm (Q) or 52.5-105mm (GXR, NX, NEX) respectively.
Close focusing down to 0.5m (20 inches) at all focal lengths, with distances marked in feet and meters, plus infrared indexes. Unusually, the lens doesn't change in size at all when focusing or zooming. The separate focus and zoom rings have large grips, and different patterns for easy identification when the camera is at the eye.
Maximum aperture is f/4, and this is constant at all focal lengths - it doesn't drop to f/4.5 or f/5.6 at longer focal lengths as some lenses do. This gives a brighter image in the viewfinder, easier focusing and faster shutter speeds in low light. It also makes exposure calculation easier, especially with manual metering or flash. The lens stops down to f/22 for maximum depth of field, and half stops are available between all marked apertures, and there's Canon's lockable A (Auto) setting for shutter priority and program modes. Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all metering and exposure modes on Canon FD and FL cameras (see below).
Canon SC (Spectra Coated) multicoated glass for reduced flare against the light, with increased contrast and colour fidelity. There's a standard 52mm filter thread, though this recedes inside the barrel so is not suitable for square filters and larger accessories. Cleverly, this means that the glass is recessed further at 70mm than it is at 35mm, so forming a particularly effective built-in lens hood - often a problem with zooms. The lens is compact and lightweight at under 90mm (3.5 inches) long and around 315g. It's nicely made (in Japan) with smooth controls and clear markings.
This is one of Canon's New FD designs, which are not only smaller and lighter than the original FD types, but use a more conventional mounting system. While all Canon FD and New FD lenses and bodies are fully compatible, the New FD types use a normal bayonet mount fitting complete with locking button, instead of the breech lock system used by their predecessors and independent lenses.
A great little zoom lens for Canon manual focus users!
Condition: Excellent+++ (8.5/10), tiny optical marks
The lens is in very good condition and fully working order. Aperture and focus controls work smoothly, the diaphragm stops down smartly and is free of oil, each aperture setting clicks into place positively, and the auto lock works securely. The glass is very clean with no scratches, misting, fungus or other problems, but just some specks of dust and other tiny marks as usual (including some inside the front element), which don't seem to affect the pictures at all. Cosmetically, there is only the usual evidence that it's been used, including some minor surface scratches and scrapes here and there - mainly around the front ring. The caps are in good condition.
No cracks, splits or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged, and overall it's in nice shape!
