This is a great little flash for users of the classic Canon manual focus SLR cameras including models such as the A-1, AE-1, T50 and T70 (see full list below). It offers dedicated operation on suitable cameras, with the shutter speed and/or aperture set automatically when the flash is charged. Flash ready shown in the viewfinder of suitable cameras. It can be used on EOS and digital cameras with restrictions (no dedicated operation - see below).
Program mode uses an innovative pre-flash system, which measures the distance to the subject before the exposure is made (with first pressure on the shutter release). This allows the flash to set a suitable aperture on the camera (f/2.8, f/4 or f/5.6) giving you more depth of field for close ups, and longer range when required. The selected aperture is shown in the camera's viewfinder on suitable A-series models and the T90 (see below), and the P indicator in the viewfinder of the T50, T70 and T80 will flash if the subject is too far away.
Auto flash range up to 11.4m (37.4 feet) with ISO 400 film. Guide number 16 (meters) and 52 (feet) with ISO 100 film. Film speeds can be set to ISO 100 or 400. Ready light provided on the rear of the unit. Flash coverage is sufficient for lenses of 35mm or longer, including wide angle, standard and zoom lenses. The flash is very well made (in Japan), with high quality materials, clear markings and a good standard of fit and finish, as you'd expect from Canon. It's very compact and lightweight, at only 86mm (3.5 inches) tall on the camera, and a mere 140g without batteries.
An excellent little flash for Canon manual focus users!
Condition: Excellent+++ (8.5/10)
The flash is in very good condition, fully working order, and dedicated features work correctly on suitable cameras. Cosmetically it shows just the usual signs of use including some scratches and scrapes in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are slightly marked but have been cleaned and work fine. No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in nice shape! At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.
Includes Canon case, plus new Alkaline batteries
Compatibility
Compatible with all Canon manual focus SLR cameras (and others) with a hot shoe, as follows:
Sets shutter speed and aperture automatically on the Canon AE-1, AE-1 Program, A-1, T50, T70, T80 and T90 (no TTL flash modes). Also works on the F-1N ("New F-1"), but a motor drive or winder is required to set the aperture automatically.
Sets shutter speed automatically on the Canon AT-1, AV-1 and AL-1. The aperture must be set manually to match that set on the flash with these models.
Can be used on non-dedicated SLRs (such as the T60, FT, FTb, FTbN, EF, TLb, TX and similar models) plus other cameras with a hot shoe fitting, in auto or manual flash modes with shutter speed and aperture set manually.
Canon manual focus flash units like this one are not fully compatible with Canon EOS film and digital cameras or the manual EF-M, which use a completely different dedicated flash control system. However, it will work with shutter speed and aperture set manually on the camera, and the flash controlling its output depending on the distance. The trigger voltage is very low at around 5v, which should be suitable for all cameras.
