This Canon Speedlite 300TL is the perfect flash unit for users of the classic Canon T90 manual camera (and many EOS 35mm models, but not the 300X or any digital models - see below). It has a bounce, swivel and wide range zoom head, is very powerful and fully dedicated, including TTL flash control. This one's in nice condition and comes with a third-part manual and Alkaline batteries.

The bounce and swivel flash head tilts up to 90 degrees and swivels 270 degrees for bounce flash in vertical or horizontal positions. Bounce flash gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Zoom flash head adjusts for 24mm and 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard and 85mm and longer telephoto lenses, giving wider coverage or greater range as appropriate.

Fully automatic exposure control, in two modes - A-TTL and FEL - depending on the subject and the user's preference. Setting the camera and flash to P (Program) gives fully automatic TTL flash control. The camera shows a warning in the viewfinder if the subject is out of flash range. A-TTL mode measures the flash exposure Through The Lens (TTL), and Off The Film (OTF), actually during the exposure. This gives the most accurate exposures possible, as it automatically compensates for the aperture, filters, bounce flash, close up accessories and other factors. The aperture and/or shutter speed can be set automatically, depending on which exposure mode you use on the camera. FEL (Flash Exposure Lock) mode uses a pre-flash system to take a spot reading from the very centre of the image before the exposure, and is useful for subjects which are unusual, such as dark subjects against bright backgrounds, etc. Using the Highlight/Shadow options on the T90 allows the photographer to balance daylight and flash exposures.

Guide number varies from 40m (130 feet) at the tele setting to 25m (81 feet) at wide angle, with ISO 100 film. A 35mm f/2 lens will work up to 30m (98 feet), and an 85mm f/1.8 will work up to 44m (144 feet) with ISO 400 film. As with all flash units, actual range will depend on the conditions. Thyristor circuitry provides faster recycling at closer distances in auto modes. Manual modes are available, with either full power for maximum range, or 1/16th power for shorter flash duration and faster recycling. Control panel on the rear, with auto or manual exposure modes, bounce indicator and zoom settings from 28mm to 85mm. Settings are illuminated to allow easy use in the dark. A ready light and test button are provided.

Automatic fill in flash in daylight, which helps to lighten the shadows in backlit portraits. Slow Sync flash works in shutter priority and aperture priority modes, where flash can be combined with a slow shutter speed to better balance the background and foreground exposure, especially with night shots. Choice of 1st or 2nd curtain flash sync. With the latter, the flash goes off towards the end of the exposure, rather than the beginning. This is typically used in combination with slow sync, where the subject is moving. This gives a blurred trail effect behind the subject, which can look very effective.

Takes 4x standard AA batteries, including disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd and NiMH types. Switchable SE auto power off system shuts the flash down to save power if it's not used for 5 minutes. The flash is very well made (in Japan), with high quality materials, clear markings and a good standard of fit and finish, as you'd expect from Canon. Standard hot shoe fitting, with locking collar for secure mounting. Usable with various Canon leads, accessories and extra flashguns (not included) for multiple flash setups, with auto TTL flash control.

The flash is in fully working order and very good condition. All features work correctly on suitable cameras, and all controls work positively. There are just the usual signs of use including some small surface scratches here and there in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion. The instruction guide (a copy of the Canon 300TL Field Guide) is in good condition and legible.

No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in nice shape!

This flash was designed for the Canon T90 manual focus SLR camera. Shutter speeds and/or apertures can be set automatically, and the flash fully supports all the T90's advanced flash exposure modes, including A-TTL and FEL.

It's also compatible with many Canon EOS 35mm cameras including the EOS 1, 1V, 1V HS, 1N, 1N RS, 5 (A2), 3, RT, 100, 10, 30, 33, 50, 50E, 55QD, 300, 300V (NOT the 300X), 500, 500N, 600, 620, 630, 650, 700, 750, 850, 1000, 1000F, 1000N, 1000FN, 3000, 3000N, 3000V and 5000, plus all Rebel, Elan and Kiss models and many others. Also works with the APS EOS IX and IX-7 (IX Lite) models. Fully auto exposure in all modes, including program. TTL (Through The Lens), OTF (Off The Film) flash metering for the most accurate exposures possible. Automatic setting of shutter speed and aperture in appropriate modes, with flash ready signal in the viewfinder. Advanced modes such as FEL and second curtain synch do NOT work on EOS cameras.

NOT suitable for EOS digital cameras, or the EOS 300X (Rebel T2, Kiss 7). These use a completely different E-TTL dedicated flash system, and you need Canon's own EX series flash units, or the latest independent flash units with E-TTL from independent makers which are specifically stated to be digital compatible. Not suitable for Canon manual focus cameras, the EF-M or any other make.
