This is an original Chinon AF-S280 TTL dedicated flash, with fully automatic operation on the Chinon CP-9AF 35mm SLR camera, and dedicated manual operation on many other Chinon SLRs (see the Compatibility section below). It's in good condition, easy to use (see the link below to an online manual) and comes with wide angle diffuser and batteries.

The guide number is a useful 28m (92 feet) with ISO 100 film. Comprehensive scales on the rear of the flash include apertures from f/2 to f/22, distances from 0.7 to 20m (3 to 66 feet) and film speeds from ISO 50 to 1000. An Auto OK indicator on the rear of the flash confirms correct exposure in TTL mode. Thyristor circuitry for fast recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. The flash covers around 60 degrees horizontally and 45 degrees vertically, so it's suitable for lenses down to around 35mm focal length, and an extra wide angle diffuser is supplied for 28mm lenses.

Full TTL (Through The Lens) flash metering is available on the Chinon CP-9AF. This is the most accurate flash system available, with readings taken directly from the film during the exposure. It works with any aperture, and automatically allows for filters and close up accessories. In aperture priority and manual modes, the range depends on the film speed and lens aperture. With an f/2.8 lens and ISO 400 film (or f/1.4 and ISO 100), you can use this flash from 0.7 to 20m (2.3 to 66 feet), but as usual, actual range will depend on the conditions. The flash sets the shutter speed automatically and displays a flash ready indication in the viewfinder. You can also use Program TTL mode, where the camera sets both shutter speed and aperture automatically.

Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required, so you can take AF pictures in complete darkness. The flash is nicely made (in Japan), yet weighs only 190g without batteries, and has firm controls and clear scales. A locking wheel allows the flash to be fixed tightly to the camera's hot shoe. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, and Alkaline disposable (supplied) or NiCd and NiMH rechargeables can be used.

An excellent flashgun for Chinon users and collectors!

The flash is in good condition and fully working order. The controls work positively, and all features work as expected. Cosmetically it shows just the usual signs of use with some surface scratches here and there in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion, and the diffuser is in good condition.

Compatibility
This flash is designed for the Chinon CP-9AF 35mm SLR camera. It's compatible with all exposure modes including program, and sets the shutter speed and/or aperture in various modes as required. TTL flash control and AF illuminator features are provided.

It can be used manually on other Chinon cameras such as the CE-4, CE-4S, CA-4, CA-4S, CG-5, CE-5, CP-5, DP-5, CP-6 Spot, CP-X and CP-7M, plus other cameras made by Chinon and sold under other names, such as the Sears KSX-P, Agfa Selectronic 2 and 3, Revue AC 3S, AC 4SP and AC5 and others. The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. As these cameras don't support TTL flash, you'll need to calculate the required aperture using the distance scale on the flash.
