Vivitar was one of the top accessory brands, and this 3200 DM/N flash is dedicated for many classic Nikon manual focus and AF 35mm film SLR cameras. It provides a flash ready indication in the viewfinder of suitable cameras, plus auto setting of shutter speeds (see below). While it's not suitable for Nikon digital cameras, it can be used on many other makes with non-dedicated operation. The flash is simple to use, and you can download a copy of the instructions (see link below). Please read the full description for more important information.
The flash provides automatic exposure control, with three auto ranges. The auto modes provide ranges of up to 9.1m (30 feet), 4.5m (15 feet) or 2.3m (7.5 feet) at f/2, f/4 or f/8 respectively, with ISO 100. As always, the actual range will depend on the conditions. Full and reduced power manual options are also available. The guide number is 18 (meters) and 60 (feet) with ISO 100, and the flash covers lenses down to 35mm (or the equivalent on other formats). A ready light, test button and auto check light are provided, plus switchable audio signals for flash ready and correct exposure.
A comprehensive table on the rear has film speeds from ASA (ISO) 25 to 400 and DIN 15 to 27, apertures from f/1 to f/32 and distances from 1 to 9m (3 to 30 feet). The flash is very well made with high quality materials, clear markings and a good standard of fit and finish, as you'd expect from Vivitar. It measures only around 110mm (4.5 inches) tall on the camera, and weighs around 175g (6.2oz) without batteries. Power is supplied by 2x standard AA batteries, including disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd and NiMH types. Standard hot shoe fitting, with locking collar for secure mounting.
A handy little flash unit for many Nikon film camera users.
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
The flash is in fully working order, the controls operate positively, and all features work as expected on suitable Nikon cameras (please note that it won't fire on digital models). Cosmetically there are the usual signs of use including some scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are slightly marked but have been cleaned and work fine.
No cracks or splits, and overall it's perfectly usable.
Includes DM/N dedicated module, plus 2x Alkaline AA batteries

This flash works on many Nikon film SLR cameras with simple dedicated operation where appropriate, as follows:
Dedicated operation with automatic setting of shutter speed and viewfinder flash ready indication on manual focus SLR cameras including the Nikon FE, FE2, FM3A, FA, FG, FG-20, F-301 (N2000) and F-601M (N6000), plus AF SLR cameras including the Nikon F-401 (N4004) series, F-501 (N2020), F-601 (N6006), F-801 (N8008), F-801s (N8008s), F50 (N50), F60 (N60), F65 (N65), F70, F75 (N75), F80 (N80), F90, F90x, F3AF, F4, F5, F6 and Nikon Pronea 600i (but not the Pronea S, which has no flash shoe). Viewfinder indication of flash ready on the Nikon FM2 and FM2n, with shutter speed set manually. Not compatible with TTL or program flash modes.
On the Nikon F55 (N55, Us) it provides fully automatic dedicated operation in the camera's Auto or P (program) modes, with the shutter speed and aperture (f/4 with ISO 100, use blue auto mode on the flash) set automatically, plus viewfinder flash ready indication. In A (aperture-priority auto) mode it sets the shutter speed automatically, apertures are set manually (so all three of the flash's auto or two manual modes can be used), with viewfinder flash ready indication, and slow synchro mode on the camera can be used to balance the background and subject. In M (manual) mode the shutter speed is restricted to the maximum allowed (1/90th) or slower, apertures are set manually (so all three of the flash's auto or two manual modes can be used), with viewfinder flash ready indication.
Non-dedicated operation is possible on other film cameras with a hot shoe including the Nikon EL2, FM, FM10, FE10, Nikkormat FT-2, FT-3, EL and ELw.
This flash is NOT suitable for Nikon digital cameras. These use different D-TTL and I-TTL dedicated flash control systems which are not supported by this flash, and it won't fire. It's NOT suitable for Nikon 1-series digital compact system cameras, which have either a non-standard flash connection or none at all.
Other cameras including digital
Not recommended for cameras with dedicated flash control (using a hot shoe with more than one contact), other than those listed above. The flash will work fine on many other cameras with a standard (non-dedicated) hot shoe, with the shutter speed and aperture set manually on the camera in M mode, and exposure controlled by the flash depending on the distance. Suitable cameras include the Panasonic FZ10, FZ20 and FZ30, Fujifilm S7000, S602 (and Pro), S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR, HS10 (down to 35mm zoom), etc.
The trigger voltage is a very low, safe 3.4v, which is well within the ISO 10330 standard of 24v, and even the most voltage-intolerant cameras usually accept up to 6v.
This Vivitar flash unit accepts interchangeable modules, and a DM/N one is included as described above. Other modules were available (NOT included) such as the DM-S (standard hot shoe), DM/C (Canon FD), DM/M (Minolta X), and DM/N2 (Nikon TTL), DM/O (Olympus OM), DM/P (Pentax) and DM/Y-C (Contax/Yashica). Also available was a DSC-1 Dedicated Sensor Cord (NOT included), for off-camera use while retaining dedicated features. Please check our other listings or contact us to see if we have any of these items available.
