This is an original Minolta flash unit for many Minolta Dynax and Maxxum AF 35mm SLR cameras, plus the S-1 APS model (but not the very early 5000-9000, the late 3L, 30, 40 and 50 models or digital cameras). It can be used as a studio slave trigger on Sony Alpha digital SLRs - see the Compatibility section below. The flash is in very good condition and comes with original Minolta case and stand, plus new AA batteries.

The bounce/swivel flash head tilts up to 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees for bounce flash, which gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Built in power zoom feature adjusts the coverage from 28 to 105mm automatically depending on the lens in use, including zooms. This gives extra coverage with wide angles, and extra range with telephotos. A manual zoom option is also provided. Powerful guide number of up to 35 (meters) and 115 (feet) at the 105mm setting with ISO 100 film. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 12.5m (41 feet) with an f/2.8 lens. Faster film gives even longer ranges, and as usual actual range will depend on the conditions.

Exposure control is automatic, and measured through the lens (TTL) for the most accurate exposure possible. Works in all exposure modes, including program, and sets shutter speed/and/or aperture automatically. Low power option to avoid over exposure for close up shots, and allow faster recycling. Auto power off feature to conserve battery power. Built-in AF illuminator to aid focusing in low light. Compatible with Minolta's wireless flash system (and suitable cameras), so it can be fired and controlled while off the camera for improved lighting control, and multi-flash configurations. A switch inside the battery compartment selects one of two channels in case of interference from other photographers. A Minolta MS-2 stand is supplied to support the flash in wireless mode, and this can be used free standing or mounted on a tripod (standard 1/4-inch thread), or to do impressions of ET.

The flash is nicely made, measures only around 100mm (4 inches) tall on the camera, and weighs only around 230g without batteries. It's powered by 4x standard AA batteries, which are inexpensive and easily obtainable. Disposable Alkaline (supplied) and rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used. The shoe is Minolta's new type (not a standard hot shoe), with locking button for secure mounting.

An excellent flash for many Minolta Dynax film users!

This flash is in fully working order and very good condition. It charges and fires correctly, and dedicated features work properly with suitable Minolta film cameras (checked on our Dynax 60). Cosmetically it shows just the usual signs of use with some surface marks here and there in the plastic finish (mainly on the rear). The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion, and the accessories are in good condition. No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in nice shape! At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.

TTL flash units like this one are not fully compatible with Minolta, Konica Minolta or Sony Alpha digital cameras, or the Minolta or Konica Minolta Dynax 3L (Maxxum 3), Dynax 30, Dynax 40 or Maxxum 50 cameras which use a different pre-flash or ADI exposure control system. These models require Konica Minolta (D), Sony or other compatible flash units for automatic exposure. NOTE: This flash will fit and fire on these cameras, and will set the shutter speed automatically when charged in A mode. This means that it can be used (ideally set to low power) as a trigger for slave studio flash units. This is particularly useful on Sony Alpha cameras in Live View mode, where the image can be very dim in M (manual) mode.

Flash units like this one are NOT suitable for the Minolta 5000 AF (Maxxum 5000, Alpha 5000), 7000 AF (Maxxum 7000, Alpha 7000), 9000 AF (Maxxum 9000, Alpha 9000) cameras with standard hot shoe, manual focus Minoltas, or any other make of camera.
