This is an original Nikon PN-1 auto extension tube, which fits between your SLR camera and lens for extra close focusing (macro) shots. It's suitable for Nikon and Nikkormat pre-AI 35mm SLR cameras and lenses (plus selected AI models - see below) but NOT Nikon AF or digital cameras, and is in excellent condition with caps. It can also be used on some other types of digital camera - see below.

The tube is 52.5mm long, so will give you life size (1:1) reproduction with the 105mm f/4 Micro Nikkor lens. The 55mm and 60mm Micro Nikkors will give larger than life size reproduction, and even greater magnification is available with wider angle lenses (a 35mm lens focuses down almost to the front element). Longer lenses offer lower magnification, but more comfortable working distances, and this tube is very useful for reducing the close focusing of telephoto lenses such as 135mm and 200mm. Of course, it works with normal lenses as well as Micro Nikkors, and a 50mm standard lens will get to slightly greater than 1:1 (life size), filling the frame with a subject as small as 24x36mm (1x1.5 inches).

The tube retains the automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering of the original pre-AI camera and lens combination (where appropriate). Compatible with metered manual exposure on most models, and aperture priority auto exposure on the Nikkormat EL and ELw. TTL metering systems will take care of the required exposure correction automatically. Please note that pre-AI lenses and accessories are NOT suitable for most AI, AF or digital cameras, though some of the earliest AI models can be used with stopped down metering - see the Compatibility Information section below for more details.

A tripod mounting ring is built in, and this rotates through 360 degrees with click stops every 90 degrees and locking screw. It has a standard 1/4-inch thread for mounting on a tripod or other support, and gives much better balance than the camera's socket - especially with large, heavy lenses. This Nikon extension tube is beautifully made (in Japan), with a solid, metal body and mounts, and a very high standard of fit and finish.

The tube is in fully working order and excellent condition. It fits and locks securely, and all linkages work correctly. Cosmetically there is little evidence that it's been used, with just some surface marks here and there, and some small scratches around the bayonet mounts where it's been attached. No dents, dings or deep scratches, and overall it's in great shape! Pictures in this listing show the actual item offered for sale.

This extension tube fits all Nikon pre-AI manual focus cameras (using the traditional Nikon meter coupling fork on top of the lens) such as the Nikon Photomic FT, FTn, F2, F2S, F2SB and Nikkormat FT, FTn, FT2, EL and ELW, with automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with manual or aperture priority automatic exposure. It also fits the the unmetered Nikon F, Nikkorex F, Nikkormat FS and the original Nikon-mount Ricoh Singlex, with auto diaphragm.

It will also fit some of the first Nikon AI 35mm SLR cameras including the FM, FE, EL2, F2A, F2AS, F3, F3HP, F3AF, F4 and Nikkormat FT3, with automatic diaphragm and stopped down metering, compatible with manual or aperture priority automatic exposure. In order to be compatible, the camera must have an AI coupling lever (at about 2 o'clock on the lens mount) which can be disengaged.

Pre-AI accessories are NOT suitable for the Nikon FM2, FE2, FA, FM10, FE10, EM, FG-20, FM3A, EM, FG, FG-20 and F-301 (N2000). They may even damage the AI meter coupling prong, and should not be mounted. NOT suitable for any Nikon AF cameras apart from the F4 models and the F3AF. Not suitable for any Nikon or Nikon-mount digital cameras.

The tube can be used with pre-AI lenses, or AI types with a meter coupling claw on top. AI lenses without the claw, plus many AF lenses with an aperture ring can be used with stopped down metering. NOT suitable for AF G or DX lenses, or any types without an aperture ring.

Pre-AI lenses and accessories can be used on several other types of digital camera using adapters (not included). Suitable cameras include Canon EOS, Olympus and Panasonic Four Thirds (4/3) and Micro Four Thirds, Samsung NX and Sony NEX. Please check that your adapter is suitable for pre-AI accessories - not all types are suitable. This tube can be used with a suitable adapter on these cameras, but only with Nikon pre-AI, AI or AF lenses with an aperture ring. NOT suitable for other AF or digital lenses. The tube is a useful accessory when using large macro lenses on these small cameras, as the tripod mount prevents damage to the camera due to the weight of the lens.
