This genuine Nikon flashgun has a bounce and swivel head and TTL dedicated auto flash control, suitable for most Nikon AF and manual focus SLR cameras, plus digital models with restrictions (see below). It's in good used condition and comes with batteries.

The flash head tilts up to 90 degrees, and the flash unit can be rotated for vertical or horizontal operation, providing bounce flash in either orientation for more even, natural lighting. Also, the flash can be pointed downwards for better illumination when taking close up (macro) shots. The auto sensor points forwards however the body and head are rotated or tilted, so exposure can be determined automatically with normal auto bounce flash, as well as in TTL mode (see below).

Guide number is 25 (meters) and 80 (feet) with ISO 100 film. This gives a likely range of up to 13.8m (44 feet) with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, and these distances double to 27.6m/88 feet with ISO 400 film! As always, actual range will depend on the conditions. The flash covers lenses down to 35mm on film cameras (or the equivalent on other formats).

Fully automatic, dedicated exposure control, with two auto ranges plus TTL auto or full manual operation. The normal auto modes give ranges of up to 20 feet (6m) at f/4, or 10 feet (3m) at f/8 respectively with ISO 100 film. Thyristor circuitry provides faster recycling at closer distances in auto modes. These conventional auto modes also work on digital SLR cameras (see below). TTL auto flash exposure control, auto setting of shutter speeds and/or apertures, and many other features with suitable film cameras (see below). TTL auto flash works through the lens while the shutter is open for the most accurate exposure possible, at any aperture and taking account of filters, bellows and other factors automatically.

The comprehensive exposure dial is clear and easy to read (note that it has no click stops, which is normal for this model). Information includes film speeds from ISO 25 to 800, apertures from f/2 to f/22 and distances from 0.6 to 20m (2 to 60 feet). Ready light/test button provided. Auto check light confirms correct exposure. The flash uses 4x standard AA batteries including disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd and NiMH types. A socket is provided for external flash sync leads for off-camera use (not included). This flash is very well made (in Japan), with high quality materials, clear markings and a very good standard of fit and finish, as you'd expect from a Nikon product. It even has a serial number, which is increasingly unusual for flash units! Standard hot shoe fitting, with locking wheel for secure mounting.

An excellent little flash unit for many Nikon users!

The flash is in fully working order (checked on our film and digital cameras), all features work as expected and all controls operate properly. The exposure dial is a little loose, but this is only used for reference and doesn't affect operation. Cosmetically there are the usual scratches and scrapes in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are marked, but have been cleaned and work fine.

No cracks or splits, and overall it's in good shape!

These use different D-TTL and I-TTL dedicated flash control systems which are not supported by this flash, but they work fine in A (aperture priority) mode, with shutter speed set automatically and aperture set manually, and exposure controlled by the flash in conventional auto modes (not TTL).

It will work in non-dedicated fashion on digital compact cameras with a standard (non-dedicated) hot shoe such as the Fujifilm S602, S7000 and S20 Pro (S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR and HS10 down to 35mm zoom), Panasonic DMC-FZ10, FZ20 and FZ30, etc. The trigger voltage is very low at just 3.6v, which should be safe for all cameras.
