This is a compact dedicated auto flashgun for Nikon manual focus SLR cameras (see below), and it also works on AF and digital models with restrictions. It's an original Nikon unit, in good condition and supplied with Nikon case, plus Alkaline batteries.

The Speedlight SB-E was designed for the compact Nikon EM, but is also usable on many other models (see below). The flash covers lenses of 35mm and longer. Even if you have a more powerful flash, this little unit makes the ideal carrying companion! The Nikon case supplied can even be fitted to a slim camera strap (not included).

Dedicated auto operation on suitable Nikon cameras (see below), setting the shutter speed automatically and showing flash ready in the viewfinder. The aperture is set on the camera manually, and it is not suitable for TTL or program flash modes. On the Nikon EM, the camera will indicate in the viewfinder if the aperture set is incorrect.

The guide number is 17m (55 feet) with ISO 100. When used on the Nikon EM, three aperture settings can be used, giving various ranges from 0.6-6m (2-20 feet). On other cameras, one aperture setting is available (f/5.6 with ISO film), for an auto range of 0.6-3m (2-10 feet). An information panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 0.6 to 6m (2 to 20 feet), apertures from f/1.8 to f/11 and film speeds from ASA (ISO) 25 to 400. A ready light is provided (also shown in the viewfinder with auto cameras).

This Nikon flashgun is very nicely made (in Japan), and weighs only 130g (without batteries). It's compact at only 110mm (4.5 inches) tall on the camera. Powered by 4x disposable alkaline AAA batteries (supplied). The battery compartment is captive, so it can't be lost.

An excellent little flash for Nikon users and collectors!

The flash is in fully working order and good condition. There are just the usual signs of use with some scratches and scrapes in the plastic finish here and there - mainly around the hot shoe. The battery contacts show signs of earlier corrosion, but have been cleaned and now work fine. The case is in good condition.

Overall, it's in good shape!
At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them. The mode switch is labelled A/OFF/B(EM) or FE.FM/OFF/EM, but it works in exactly the same way on either version.

Compatibility
The flash is designed for Nikon manual focus 35mm SLR cameras with a hot shoe, and offers dedicated features as follows:

Dedicated auto flash works on auto models including the Nikon EM, FG, FG-20, F-301 (N2000), FE, FE2, FM3A, FA and F-601M (N6000). The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. The aperture is set on the camera manually, and it is not suitable for TTL or program flash modes. The Nikon EM confirms in the viewfinder that a suitable aperture is set, when used with compatible AIS or AF lenses. Viewfinder indication of flash ready on the Nikon FM2, FM2N and FM2T.

It can also be used with Nikon AF and digital SLR cameras. The correct shutter speed is set automatically with the camera in A (Aperture Priority) auto mode, the flash set to FE/FM (A), and the aperture is set manually. Not compatible with program or TTL flash modes.

It's also suitable for non-dedicated Nikon SLR cameras with a hot shoe including the FM, FM10, FE10, EL2 and F3P, Nikkormat EL, ELW, FT2 and FT3, with manual shutter speed and aperture setting, and auto exposure controlled by the flash depending on the distance.
