This original Pentax AF flashgun is suitable for all Pentax AF 35mm SLR cameras, the 645N and 645NII medium format SLRs, plus the *ist D, DS and DS2 and Samsung GX-1S digital (but not other DSLRs - see below). It's very powerful, dedicated with full TTL flash exposure control, and has an AF illuminator for focusing in low light. This one's in good condition with only some small cosmetic issues (see below), and comes with a copy of the instructions, plus Alkaline batteries.

The bounce/swivel flash head tilts up to 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees and swivels up to 270 degrees for bounce flash in vertical or horizontal positions. Bounce flash gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Zoom head adjusts to cover lenses from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard, to 105mm (and longer) telephoto. This gives more coverage for wide angle lenses, and greater range with longer ones.

This is a powerful flash with guide numbers up to 44 (m), 143 (feet) at the longest zoom setting down to 29m (94 feet) at the widest angle. Theoretical maximum range up to 28.5m (93 feet) with 50mm f/1.4 lens and ISO 100 film but as with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions.

TTL (Through The Lens) automatic exposure system for extremely accurate exposures. Works automatically in all exposure modes, including Program. Automatic fill-in flash in daylight, including slow sync flash to balance the background and foreground exposure in metered manual mode. Second curtain flash sync gives more realistic shots if the subject is moving. Usable with film speeds from ISO 25 to 1600. Hi and Low power manual settings - the latter avoids over-exposure close up, and dramatically reduces recycling times. Power saving mode switches the flash off after 5 minutes if it's not used, to save battery power.

Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required, up to around 6m (19.5 feet). With some cameras (mainly older models with off-centre flash shoes) the flash can be used at the same time as the built in flash.

Very comprehensive control panel on the rear displays zoom settings, TTL or manual modes, sync mode, distances from 0.7m to 40m (3 to 130 feet), and apertures from f/1.4 to f/32. Flash ready and exposure OK indicators on the rear of the flash (also shown in the viewfinder of suitable cameras). Takes 4x standard AA batteries including disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable types. Locking shoe fitting for secure mounting. The flash is nicely made (in Japan) and quite large, but not too heavy at around 385g without batteries. Screw-in accessory socket provided for the optional Pentax Sync Cord F (not included), used for off-camera flash.

An excellent flash for Pentax AF and early digital SLR users!

The flash is in good condition, and it has been tested for proper operation on a Pentax *ist DS DSLR camera. There's some play in the swivel movement, but this is common and doesn't cause any problems. The LEDs illuminating the zoom settings on the rear control panel are somewhat intermittent, but as the zoom is adjusted manually this has little effect on operation. Cosmetically it shows only the usual signs of use including some surface scrapes and scratches here and there in the plastic finish, and a tiny piece of plastic is missing from the rear of the shoe (this has no effect on fitting). The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion, and the instructions are a copy but legible. Overall, it's in good shape. Pictures in this listing show the actual item offered for sale.

This flash can be used on many Pentax 35mm and medium format AF SLR cameras, including the SFX (SF1), SFXn (SF1n), SF7, Z-1 (PZ-1), Z-1P (PZ-1P), Z-10 (PZ-10), Z-20 (PZ-20), Z-70 (PZ-70), MZ-3, MZ-5 (ZX-5), MZ-5n (ZX-5n), MZ-6 (ZX-L), MZ-7 (ZX-7), MZ-10 (ZX-10), MZ-30 (ZX-30), MZ-50 (ZX-50) MZ-50 (ZX-60) MZ-S and *ist 35mm cameras, and the 645N and 645NII medium format cameras. Automatic, dedicated operation with shutter speed and/or aperture set automatically (depending on the exposure mode) when the flash is charged, and flash ready status shown in the viewfinder. TTL Auto flash control system for the most accurate exposures. It's also usable on the Pentax 67 II with a Hot Shoe Grip and Sync Cord (not included).

It's compatible with the Pentax *ist D, DS, DS2 and Samsung GX-1S digital SLRs in TTL mode. ISO settings of 200 or 400 are recommended for TTL flash on digital. Not suitable for any other Pentax or Samsung digital models, which only support P-TTL - see below.

AF flash units are NOT suitable for manual focus Pentax cameras such as the Super A (Super Program), Program A (Program Plus), A3 (A3000), P30 (P3), P30N (P3N), P30T (P3T), P50 (P5) and MZ-M (ZX-M), ME, MX, KM, KX, K2, LX, K1000, Spotmatic and other M42 cameras, the 645 manual focus, EI-2000 digital, or any other makes. Not suitable for the *ist DL, DL2, K100D, K100D Super, K110D, K200D, K10D, K20D, K-m (K2000), K-x, K-r, K-5, K-7, K-01 or 645D digital, or the related Samsung GX-1L, GX-10 or GX-20 models. These digital cameras require P-TTL flash units for full compatibility, but some flashes for Pentax manual focus cameras can be used with restrictions - please check our other listings or contact us for details. Not suitable for Samsung NX cameras.
