This is a genuine Pentax AF160 flash designed for the company's manual focus SLR cameras, but also suitable for many AF, digital and medium format models with restrictions (see below). On suitable cameras the dedicated auto mode sets the shutter speed automatically and displays a flash ready indication in the viewfinder (the aperture is set manually).

The guide number is 16m (52 feet) with ISO 100 film. Two auto exposure ranges are available, with ranges up 6m (18 feet) at f/2.8 or 4m (12 feet) at f/4, with ISO 100 film. Full manual override is also possible, which can give even longer range - up to around 12m (36 feet) with an f/2.8 lens and ISO 400, but as with all flash units, actual range will depend on the conditions. An exposure table on the rear includes film speeds from ASA (ISO) 25 to 400, distances from 1 to 12m (3 to 36 feet) and apertures from f/1.4 to f/32. Ready light with test button provided.

It's very compact at only around 80mm (3.25 inches) tall on the camera, and weighs only 105g without batteries. Power is supplied by 2x standard AA batteries, and disposable alkaline (included) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used. Even if you have a larger flash, this unit makes a great backup, and is ideal to carry around "just in case".

An excellent little flashgun for Pentax users!

This flash is in fully working order and good condition. It charges and fires correctly, and dedicated features work properly with Pentax cameras (checked on our own *ist DS digital). Cosmetically it has some scratches and scrapes in the plastic finish here and there, and the scales on the rear are worn but legible. The battery contacts are slightly marked (not corroded) but work fine. No cracks or splits, and overall it's in good used condition. At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.

The shutter speed is set automatically when the flash is charged, and flash ready status is shown in the viewfinder. Please note that this flash is not compatible with TTL or program flash modes. On AF and digital cameras you need to set the aperture manually (A mode works well), and then the flash sets the correct exposure depending on the distance.

Auto or manual (non-dedicated) flash modes work on older Pentax cameras such as the ME, MX, KM, KX, K2, K1000, Spotmatic and other M42 cameras, plus many others.

Not recommended for other makes of camera with dedicated flash features, but will work on non-dedicated cameras with a normal hot shoe.
