Pentax AF cameras use the same lens mount as the company's previous manual focus models, and the SF7 (sold as the SF-10 in some markets) is fully compatible with Pentax AF, KA and K lenses. It makes a great upgrade from a manual Pentax, or many other cameras using the popular PK lens mount. This one's in good condition, and comes with an extra bounce and zoom auto flash unit, Pentax instruction manual, and batteries.
The camera has a full complement of exposure modes, including shutter priority, aperture priority, metered manual and fully auto (program). The program mode automatically adjusts for the focal length of the AF lens, giving faster speeds with longer lenses. The metering system reads the film speed automatically using DX coding from ISO 25 to 5000. An auto exposure memory lock is available for taking close up or off-centre readings of difficult subjects. Shutter speeds go up to 1/2000th of a second, plus B for time exposures. In auto modes, speeds go down to 30 seconds. Flash sync is at 1/125th. A socket is provided for a Pentax electrical remote control lead (not included).
Film loading, advance and rewind are motorised, and there's a choice of single frame or continuous winding at 2fps, plus self timer. Film can be rewound in mid-roll, if desired. The camera back is removable, and contacts are provided for a data back (not included). The viewfinder is bright and clear, and displays a simple shutter speed scale (colour coded for at-a-glance confirmation), focusing, flash ready and mode indicators. There's also a large, clear top-plate LCD which displays exposure and mode information, plus the frame counter - this is tilted at an angle to make it easier to read, a feature once used on the flagship Pentax model, the MZ-S.
The camera focuses automatically or manually with Pentax AF and independent Pentax AF-fit lenses, and manually with all others. Even some manual lenses can be focused automatically using the Pentax AF 1.7x converter (not included). A beeper confirms correct auto focus, and this can be switched off if you prefer. The autofocus works well, and you can lock focus on off-centre subjects by maintaining half-pressure on the shutter release. Focus indicators in the viewfinder work with faster manual focus lenses, too, and a Trap Focus mode can be used to release the shutter automatically when a subject comes into focus - great for unattended wildlife shots!
There's a built-in, popup flash, which will cover lenses as wide as 35mm, and accurate exposure is determined through the lens (TTL flash). Shutter speeds and apertures are set automatically in program modes. The flash can also project a beam of light to assist the AF system in low light. A standard hot shoe allows the use of external flashguns, and this has contacts for dedicated auto TTL flash modes with suitable Pentax and independent flash units.
Includes extra bounce and zoom dedicated flash unit
This independent Sakar 717AF flash is suitable for the Pentax SF range of AF 35mm SLR cameras (but NOT any other film or digital models). It's compact and lightweight, dedicated with full TTL flash exposure control, and has an AF illuminator for focusing in low light. The flash head tilts up to 90 degrees for bounce flash, which gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Zoom flash head is adjustable for 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard and 85mm (or longer) telephoto. This gives greater coverage with wide angles, and longer range with telephotos lenses. A 28mm diffuser is supplied for wider angle lenses. Guide number varies with the zoom setting, from 17 to 34m (56 to 112 feet) with ISO 100 film. TTL (Through The Lens) dedicated automatic flash control system, sets shutter speed and/or aperture automatically depending on exposure mode. It's powered by 4x standard AA batteries, and disposable alkaline types are recommended (supplied).
An excellent AF camera from Pentax, especially for PK users!
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
The camera is in good condition and fully working order. All functions work correctly, and all controls work smoothly and positively. The viewfinder has just a few specks of dust which can't affect the pictures, of course. Cosmetically the dark grey finish is good, and there are just the usual surface scratches and scrapes here and there - more obviously on top of the flash, on the base and around the strap lugs - but no cracks, splits or deep scratches. The instructions are complete and legible. The flash is in excellent condition, complete and boxed with instructions, wide diffuser and colour filters.
Overall, this is a nice outfit, in good shape!
At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.
Includes bounce and zoom flash unit, Pentax instruction manual, hot shoe cover, body cap and batteries
Compatibility
Hundreds of lenses are available for this camera (not included). Pentax AF lenses (usually marked SMC Pentax F or FA) and most independent Pentax AF-fit lenses will fit and work fine in all exposure modes, with auto or manual focusing. The very latest budget Pentax FA-J AF lenses and independent equivalents will fit and work, but only in program mode or shutter priority auto modes, as they have no aperture rings. Not suitable for Pentax DA or independent digital lenses, which will not cover the full frame.
Pentax KA lenses (marked SMC Pentax A) have the A (Auto) setting on the aperture ring plus electrical contacts on the mount, and work with all exposure modes, as do independent KA lenses from Vivitar, Tamron, Sigma and many others. These are usually marked KA or PKA. Caution is advised with PKA/R or Ricoh P lenses, though, some of which can jam on the mount on Pentax cameras.
Pentax K lenses (marked SMC Pentax) and independent K-mount lenses also fit, with auto diaphragm and full aperture metering. Shutter priority and program modes are unavailable with these lenses, though all others still work fine. The Pentax K mount was also used on cameras by other manufacturers, including some from Chinon, Cosina, Ricoh, Vivitar and many others. Manual or fixed diaphragm optics and accessories (such as t-mount or mirror lenses, slide copiers, etc.) also work in manual and aperture priority modes.
Finally, adapters are available for most M42 screw fit lenses, and Pentax 645 or 67 medium format lenses. These don't retain auto diaphragm, so the lens must be stopped down manually, and metering is at the taking aperture. Metered manual and aperture priority modes will work correctly, though.
