Vivitar was one of the top accessory brands, and this is an excellent TTL auto bounce zoom AF flashgun for the earliest range of Minolta Dynax 3000i, 5000i, 7000i and 8000i 35mm AF SLR cameras (but not earlier, later or any digital models - see below). It's in very good condition, and comes with batteries.

The bounce flash head tilts 90 degrees and swivels 270 degrees for bounce flash in horizontal or vertical positions, giving much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. Zoom facility for lenses from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 85mm (and longer) telephoto. This gives longer range with telephoto lenses, and better coverage with wide angles. An extra wide angle diffuser is supplied for lenses down to 20mm.

Powerful guide numbers of 42m (136 feet) at 85mm, 36m (117ft) at 50mm, 30m (97 feet) at 35mm and 25m (81 feet) at 28mm with ISO 100. Theoretical maximum range is up to 25.7m (85 feet) with ISO 100 and 50mm f/1.4 lens. Greater range is available with faster film and longer lenses but as with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. TTL (Through The Lens) automatic exposure system for extremely accurate exposures. Works automatically in all exposure modes, including Program. Thyristor circuitry for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. A full power manual mode is also provided. The flash works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required on compatible cameras.

Comprehensive control panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 1.8 to 15m (6 to 50 feet), apertures from f/1.4 to f/32 and film speeds from ISO 50 to 1000. Ready light provided, plus auto check light (and switchable audio signal) confirms correct exposure after the shot has been taken. This Vivitar 636AF Mi flashgun is very nicely made (in Japan), yet weighs only around 325g (without batteries). Powered by 4x standard AA batteries including disposable alkaline (supplied) or NiCd and NiMH rechargeable types. Captive battery compartment cover which can't easily be dropped or lost. Locking shoe fitting for secure mounting.

An excellent flash for early Minolta AF users and collectors!

The flash is in fully working order, and has been checked on our Minolta Dynax 7000i. Cosmetically it's in good condition with just the usual signs of use, including some surface marks here and there in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion, and the accessories are in good condition. No dents, dings or deep scratches, and overall it's in nice shape! AF flash units like this one are NOT suitable for Minolta, Konica Minolta or Sony Alpha digital cameras, or the Minolta or Konica Minolta Dynax 3L (Maxxum 3), Dynax 30, Dynax 40 or Maxxum 50 cameras which use a different pre-flash or ADI exposure control system. These models require Konica Minolta (D), Sony or other compatible flash units.

Dynax flash units like this one are NOT suitable for the Minolta 5000 AF (Maxxum 5000, Alpha 5000), 7000 AF (Maxxum 7000, Alpha 7000), 9000 AF (Maxxum 9000, Alpha 9000) cameras with standard hot shoe, manual focus Minoltas, or any other make of camera.
