Nissin is a Japanese manufacturer of flash units under their own name and many others, and this 360TW model is powerful, versatile, and can be used with many cameras with a standard hot shoe or flash synchro socket. It's ideal for many 35mm and medium format models, plus modern digital cameras including popular Panasonic and Fujifilm models as it has a fairly low, safe trigger voltage (see below). It can also be used on many digital SLRs in non-dedicated modes. This one's in good condition with wide/tele diffusers, colour filters and Alkaline batteries, and you can download a copy of the instruction leaflet (see link below).

The flash head can tilt up to 90 degrees vertically, and swivel over 300 degrees horizontally, for bounce flash in portrait or landscape orientations. Bounce flash gives softer, more natural lighting than direct flash, reduces the chance of redeye, and spreads the light over a wider area for wide angle lenses. A secondary flash tube is built in, and this fills in the shadows when bounce flash is used - especially useful for portraits, where it also adds a catchlight in the subject's eyes. It can be switched on or off as desired. The flash covers lenses down to 35mm or the equivalent on other formats, and diffusers are supplied for 28mm wide angle and 85mm (and longer) telephoto, or the equivalents.

This is a powerful flash unit with a guide number of 36m (118 feet) at ISO 100. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 21m (68 feet) with an f/1.7 standard lens, and up to double this at ISO 400. As always, actual range will depend on the conditions. Auto or manual exposure control, with three auto ranges. This gives a choice of settings (f/2.8, f/5.6 or f/11 with ISO 100) for auto shots to suit the subject, with ranges up to 13m (42 feet), 6.5m (21 feet) and 3.3m (11 feet) respectively. The auto sensor on the front of the flash remains pointed at the subject even if the flash is tilted or swivelled, retaining auto exposure for bounce flash. Auto check light confirms correct exposure after each picture (or test firing). Thyristor circuitry for reduced recycling times (or to keep up with auto winders) and more flashes per set of batteries at close distances. Manual operation is also available at full, half or quarter power (useful for Strobist operation). Very comprehensive scales on the rear include film speeds from ISO 25 to 400 (DIN 15 to 27 for German users), apertures from f/2 to f/22 and distances from 1 to 18 meters (3.5 to 59 feet). Ready light and test button provided.

Power is supplied by standard AA batteries, which are inexpensive and easily obtainable. 4x disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used. The flash is very nicely made (in Japan), measures around 135mm (5.25 inches) tall on the camera, and weighs around 340g without batteries. Standard hot shoe fitting with locking ring for secure mounting.

The flash is in good condition and fully working order. All features and controls work properly, and the flash has been checked for correct operation on our film and digital cameras. Cosmetically it shows only signs of normal use, including some surface scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The battery contacts are slightly marked (not corroded) but have been cleaned and work fine. The accessories are in good condition.

No cracks or splits, and overall it's in good shape!

Compatibility
This flash has a standard hot shoe fitting which has been used on cameras for generations, including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even many modern digital cameras. This includes many digital cameras with a standard (single pin) hot shoe and suitable models are the Fujifilm S20 Pro, S7000, S602, S602 Pro, S9000, S9100, S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR, Panasonic DMC-FZ10, FZ20, FZ30 (FZ50 non-dedicated), Pentax EI-2000 (HP PhotoSmart C912) plus many others. Works on the Fujifilm HS10 (HS20EXR non-dedicated), but only at focal lengths down to 28mm equivalent, or with bounce flash.

It's also usable on many digital SLR cameras and digital compact system cameras (and lenses down to 28mm equivalent), using non-dedicated operation. You set the shutter speed and aperture manually on the camera in M mode, and the flash adjusts its output automatically depending on the distance. Not suitable for Konica Minolta, Sony Alpha or NEX digital cameras, which have non-standard flash connections.

NOTE: Many older flashguns have high trigger voltages - sometimes hundreds of volts - which can theoretically damage modern electronic cameras. We've tested this flash and it has a low trigger voltage of under 10.7v, which is suitable for most cameras. This is well within the ISO 10330 standard of 24v, and only the most voltage-intolerant cameras such as budget Canon EOS specify up to 6v. If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment.
