Sunpak is one of the top Japanese flash manufacturers, and this Auto 433AF/CA flashgun is suitable for most Canon EOS 35mm and APS film SLR cameras, but NOT the EOS 300X or any digital models (see below). It's powerful, versatile and comes with instructions and batteries, and is ideal for cameras with no built in flash, or for longer range and/or bounce flash.

The bounce flash head tilts and/or swivels for more even, natural lighting, at up to 90 degrees vertically and 330 degrees horizontally. Coverage is suitable for lenses down to 35mm, but wider lenses can be used with bounce flash. An AF illuminator on the front assists with auto focusing in low light, on selected cameras (not all EOS models support this feature).

This is a powerful flash unit with a guide number of 36 (meters) and 120 (feet) with ISO 100 film. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 20m (67 feet) with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, and this doubles to 40m/134 feet with ISO 400 film. As always, actual range will depend on the conditions. Thyristor circuitry provides faster recycling at closer distances in auto modes. TTL auto flash exposure control, auto setting of shutter speeds and/or apertures, and many other features with suitable cameras (see below). TTL flash measures the exposure through the lens while the shutter's open for the most accurate exposure possible, working at any aperture and taking account of filters, bellows and other factors automatically. A ready light/test button is provided, and an auto check light confirms correct exposure.

This Sunpak flash is very well made (in Japan), with high quality materials, clear markings and a good standard of fit and finish, as you'd expect from Sunpak. It measures around 144mm (5.7 inches) tall on the camera, and weighs around 320g without batteries. The flash requires 4x standard AA batteries, including disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd and NiMH types. Socket for external power supply (not included). Captive battery compartment cover, which can't be lost. Standard hot shoe fitting, with locking wheel for secure mounting.

An excellent high power flash unit for most Canon EOS film users!

Condition: Excellent++ (8/10), some play
The flash is in fully working order and good condition, and has been tested on our EOS film cameras for correct operation. Cosmetically it shows just the usual signs of use with some surface scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The bounce movement is a little loose with some play (we've priced this accordingly), and the battery contacts are clean with no sign of corrosion. The instructions are crumpled and stained, but still legible.

No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in good shape!

This flash is compatible with almost all Canon EOS 35mm cameras including the EOS 1, 1V, 1V HS, 1N, 1N RS, 5, 3, RT, 100, 10, 30, 33, 50, 50E, 55QD, 300, 300V (but NOT the EOS 300X/Rebel T2/Kiss 7 - see below), 500, 500N, 600, 620, 630, 650, 700, 750, 850, 1000, 1000F, 1000N, 1000FN, 3000, 3000N, 3000V and 5000, plus the equivalent Rebel, Elan and Kiss models and many others. It also works with the APS EOS IX and IX-7 (IX Lite) models

Fully auto exposure in all modes, including program. TTL (Through The Lens), OTF (Off The Film) flash metering for the most accurate exposures possible. Automatic setting of shutter speed and aperture in appropriate modes, with flash ready signal in the viewfinder.

TTL flash units like this one are NOT suitable for any EOS digital cameras, or the EOS 300X (EOS Rebel T2, EOS Kiss 7). These use a completely different E-TTL dedicated flash system, and you need Canon's own EX series flash units, or the latest independent flash units with E-TTL from independent makers which are specifically stated to be digital compatible. Not suitable for Canon manual focus cameras, the EF-M or any other make.
