Sunpak is one of the top independent flash brands, and this is an excellent flash unit for Pentax AF SLR cameras plus the *ist D, DS and DS2 digital (and the Samsung GX-1S - see below), but not any other DSLR cameras. It has a bounce and zoom head, AF illuminator, and provides fully automatic dedicated TTL flash control. It's in excellent condition and boxed with instructions, extra wide angle diffuser, mini reflector and new batteries.
Wide range zoom flash head with 28mm and 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard plus 85mm and longer telephoto positions, to give extra coverage for wide angle lenses, and extra range with telephotos. With suitable DSLRs the coverage is sufficient for wider lenses because of the smaller sensor (we've tried one of these with the Pentax DA 18-55mm, and it covers well even at the widest setting). An extra wide angle diffuser is supplied, and this expands the coverage to lenses down to 20mm or the equivalent on other formats. The bounce/swivel flash head tilts up to 90 degrees and swivels up to 270 degrees for bounce flash in vertical or horizontal positions. Bounce flash gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. A small reflector is supplied to allow more diffused flash when a ceiling or other surface isn't available.
The guide number varies from approximately 44m (143 feet) at 85mm, through 40m (130 feet) at 50mm to 24m (78 feet) at 28mm with ISO 100. Theoretical maximum range of up to 28m (92 feet) with 50mm f/1.4 lens and ISO 100, and even more with higher ISO films or settings. As with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. ISO settings of 200 or 400 are recommended with compatible digital cameras (see below). Thyristor circuitry provides faster recycling at close distances.
TTL (Through The Lens) flash control system for extremely accurate exposures, compensating automatically for bounce flash, filters, extension tubes/bellows and other factors. Works automatically in all exposure modes, including Program, setting the shutter speed and/or aperture automatically as appropriate. Comprehensive scales on the rear of the flash include film speeds from ISO 25 to 800, apertures from f/1.4 to f/22 and distances from 1.8 to 28m (5.9 to 94 feet). Ready light, test button and auto check light provided. Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This projects a coloured pattern onto the subject for the camera's AF system to lock onto even in complete darkness, and is switched on manually when required.
This Sunpak MZ440AF-PT flashgun measures around 140mm (5.5 inches) tall on the camera, and under 300g without batteries. Takes 4x standard AA batteries (supplied), and alkaline types are recommended. Standard hot shoe fitting, with locking collar for secure mounting.
An excellent flash unit for Pentax AF and some digital SLR users!
Condition: Mint- (almost as new)
The flash is in fully working order, and has been checked on our Pentax *ist DS digital camera. Cosmetically it's in excellent condition with just the usual signs of use including some minor surface marks in the plastic finish. There's a small amount of play in the swivel and zoom movements, but this is common and doesn't cause any problems. The battery contacts are clean with no signs of corrosion. The box and accessories are in good condition.
No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall this is an excellent flash unit in great shape!
At the time of listing we have more than one of this item, but the pictures and description here are representative of all of them.
