35mm or digital SLRs - With caps and hood
Sigma is one of the top Japanese independent lens manufacturers, and this is a really compact, long range telephoto zoom lens with auto or manual focus for many of the earlier Canon EOS 35mm and APS SLR cameras, plus the D30 and D60 digital (but not any later film or digital models such as the 30D - see full list below). It's in very good condition and comes with lens caps and hood.
This telephoto zoom lens offers focal lengths from 100mm portrait, through 135mm and 200mm tele all the way to 300mm - probably the longest focal length most people are comfortable hand holding. It's a great range for sports, candid shots, wildlife and many other subjects. The diagonal angle of view is 24.4 to 8.2 degrees on film cameras.
On the EOS D30 (not 30D) and D60 digital SLRs the effective focal length range will be even longer at around 160-480mm, giving extra telephoto power and magnification. On the EOS APS cameras it's equivalent to around 125-375mm.
Focusing is automatic or manual on suitable EOS cameras, and manual on the EF-M. The manual focus ring is large with a ribbed grip and smooth to operate, which isn't always the case with AF lenses. Distance scales are marked clearly in feet and meters, plus infrared index and even a basic depth of field scale. Close focusing down to 2m (6.6 feet) at all focal lengths. This gives a reproduction ratio of 1:5.8 (between one fifth and one sixth life size) at 300mm. Focusing runs from infinity to the closest setting in one go, with no separate macro setting or mode to engage.
Automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering, with aperture settings controlled from the camera, compatible with all exposure and metering modes (see below). Maximum aperture is f/4.5-6.7, and apertures stop down to f/22-27. Multicoated (MC) glass for increased contrast and colour fidelity, and reduced flare against the light, with 13 elements in 10 groups. The filter thread is a standard 55mm - small for a 100-300mm lens. A dedicated bayonet-fit lens hood is included to reduce flare even more, and this reverses over the front of the lens for carrying or storage.
This Sigma DL zoom lens is nicely constructed (in Japan), with a metal lens mount, smooth controls, clear markings and a high standard of fit and finish. Despite the long zoom range, the lens is incredibly small and lightweight at only around 105mm (4.2 inches) long at its smallest settings on the camera, and a mere 365g. Many 70-210mm zooms are bigger than this...
A really nice long telephoto zoom for early Canon EOS film and D30/D60 digital users!
Condition: Excellent+++ (8.5/10)
The lens is in very good condition and fully working order. Auto and manual focus work well, and the diaphragm stops down smartly and is free of oil. The glass is very clean with no fungus, misting, scratches or other problems, but just some specks of dust and other tiny marks as usual, which will have no effect on the pictures. Cosmetically there is only the usual evidence that it's been used with some surface marks here and there, some small scratches on the rear mount, etc. The rear cap is slightly marked but fits fine, and the hood and front cap are in good condition.
No dents, dings or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged and overall it's in good shape!
