This is an excellent TTL auto bounce zoom flashgun for many Minolta Dynax 35mm film SLR cameras, plus the Vectis S1 APS model (see the Compatibility section of the full description for a full list). Please note that it's NOT suitable for the early 5000, 7000 and 9000 models with standard hot shoe, the late Minolta Dynax 3L, 30, 40 and 50, or any Konica Minolta or Sony digital cameras. It's in good condition, fully working order, supplied with instructions (copy) and batteries.
The bounce flash head tilts up to 30, 45, 60 or 90 degrees for bounce flash, giving much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash, with reduced redeye. There's a zoom facility for lenses from 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 85mm (and longer) telephoto. This gives longer range with telephoto lenses, and better coverage with wide angles, and even wider lenses can be used with bounce flash.
The guide numbers vary from 34m/114ft (tele), through 30m/100 feet (standard) to 25m/81 feet (wide) with ISO 100 film. Auto ranges up to 21m (71 feet) with ISO 100 film and 50mm f/1.4 lens, but as with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. TTL (Through The Lens) automatic exposure system for extremely accurate exposures. Fully automatic, dedicated operation in all exposure modes, including Program. Automatic fill in flash in daylight, and slow sync flash on suitable cameras. Thyristor circuitry for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. It works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has an AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required on suitable cameras.
A control panel on the top of the flash provides distances from 1.1 to 17m (3.6 to 57 feet), apertures from f/1.4 to f/22 and film speeds from ISO 25 to 1000. A ready light and test button are provided, plus an auto check light confirms correct exposure after the shot has been taken (also shown in the viewfinder with some cameras).
This independent Cobra 440AF Mi flashgun is nicely made, measures around 110mm (4.5 inches) tall, and weighs approximately 225g (7.9oz) without batteries. Power is supplied by 4x standard disposable alkaline AA batteries, and one set is included. This flash has the proprietary type of flash shoe used by many modern Minolta cameras (see below), complete with locking switch.
A handy little flash unit for many Minolta Dynax and Maxxum film SLR users.
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
This flash is in good condition and fully working order. It charges and fires correctly, and dedicated features work properly with suitable Minolta Dynax film cameras. Cosmetically it shows just the usual surface scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The battery cover is a little loose when the compartment is empty but holds firmly when loaded, while the contacts are clean and work fine. The instructions are a copy (in English) but quite legible.
No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in good shape.
Includes copy of instructions, plus 4x Alkaline AA batteries .
Pictures in this listing show the actual flash offered for sale.
Compatibility
This flash has the proprietary Minolta shoe fitting, and will work with many Minolta Dynax 35mm film SLR models, but not all. Compatible cameras include the Dynax 3000i, 5000i, 7000i, 8000i, 2xi, 3xi, 5xi, 7xi, 9xi, 300si, 303si, 404si, 500si, 450si, 500si Super, 550si, 505si, 505si Super, 600si, 650si, 700si, 800si, 60, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 and the APS Vectis S-1 (but not the S-100 which has no external flash shoe). It's suitable for two very early Minolta digital cameras: the RD-175 (also sold as the Agfa ActionCam) and Dimage RD-3000 – but not later models.
It's NOT compatible with the Dynax 3L, 40, Minolta, Konica Minolta or Sony Alpha digital cameras, which use a different pre-flash or ADI exposure control system which requires digital flash units.
It's NOT compatible with the Minolta 5000 AF, 7000 AF or 9000 AF cameras with standard hot shoe, manual focus Minoltas, or any other make of camera. Adapters are available (not included) for use on some of these cameras, often with restrictions. Please check our other listings for flash units compatible with these cameras.
