Canon's EOS range are among the best selling autofocus SLR cameras, and the EOS 300V is one of the modern, ultra compact 35mm models (sold in some countries as the EOS Rebel Ti or EOS Kiss 5), introduced as recently as 2002. It's very small and lightweight, yet compatible with the vast range of Canon EF and independent EOS-fit lenses (not included). This body is in very good condition and comes with Canon instruction manual, wide strap, body cap, remote cap and batteries. Please read the full description for more important information.
Exposure modes include variable program, shutter priority, aperture priority, metered manual, fully auto and five subject-based modes; portraits, landscapes, close ups, sports and night shots. Plus, Canon's auto depth of field mode calculates the correct aperture to ensure both subject and background are in focus. A depth of field preview button provides a visual check of what will be in focus before you take the shot, in all modes. Metering modes include evaluative (35 separate zones are compared), centre weighted and partial (9.5%) with exposure lock. Exposure compensation of +/- 2 stops (in half stops) is available. Auto bracketing option for a sequence of shots at up to 2 stops over and under the metered exposure. Multiple exposure option for up to nine exposures on one frame.
Shutter speeds and aperture settings, plus an exposure bar graph are clearly displayed in the viewfinder, and there's a second LCD on the back plate. This is very large (much bigger than that found on top of most cameras), with an extremely clear display – the large digits are extremely easy to read. The camera has a full range of shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/2000th in half stops, with flash synchronization up to 1/90th, plus B for time exposures. The built in motor loads the film automatically, winds on, and winds off the film at the end. The clever prewind feature means that if you open the back accidentally, only the unused shots are affected. Single frame and continuous shooting are available.
The built in flash fires automatically when needed in the subject-based modes, and can be turned on or off in all other modes. Redeye reduction is available, and a standard Canon hot shoe allows external TTL dedicated flashguns to be used. The camera is compatible with Canon's new E-TTL flash control system using suitable EX flash units, but unlike the later EOS 300X these are not required and the camera works fine with many older TTL flashes (please check our other listings).
The autofocus system has seven AF sensors (selected automatically or manually) to ensure that your subject is correctly identified and focused, and an auxiliary lamp illuminates the subject for focusing in very low light. The viewfinder has a dioptre adjustment to provide the clearest view for those of us with less than perfect eyesight.
Other advanced features include multiple exposures, ISO film speed override, cancellable audio warnings, self timer and mid-roll rewind. The camera also has a standard 2.5mm socket for an electrical remote control (not supplied). This combination of automatic features and manual options makes this an ideal camera for photographers from complete beginners all the way up to enthusiasts. Plus, the camera's light weight (365g or 12.9oz without film or batteries) and small size (130x88x64mm or 5.1x3.5x2.5") make it easy to carry around. It's even a great second camera for existing EOS users who want a backup, to use two different film types at the same time, or to mix film and digital. The 300V is very stylish, with a modern design and silver/metallic grey finish.
This is a super little Canon EOS AF 35mm film SLR camera body.
Condition: Excellent+++ (8.5/10)
The camera is in fully working order, all controls operate smoothly and positively, while the viewfinder is bright and clear. Cosmetically there are only normal signs of use with some surface marks and small scratches here and there in the finish (mainly on the base and one end). The manual is complete and legible (in English), the strap is showing signs of age but the accessories are in good condition.
Overall, this is a nice film camera body, and like the popular EOS 300 it's ideal for photography students.
Includes Canon instruction manual, wide strap with eyepiece cover, rubber eyecup, body cap and remote socket cover, plus 2x CR2 batteries. Pictures in this listing show the actual camera offered for sale.
Compatibility
Canon EOS cameras can accept a huge range of lenses from Canon and other manufacturers (not included), as follows:
Canon has dozens of excellent lenses in the vast EF range including ultra wide angles and fisheyes, fast prime wide angle, standard and telephoto lenses, extreme teles, macro and tilt/shift lenses, plus an array of zooms including wide angle, wide-tele and telephoto types. Many use Canon's USM (UltraSonic Motor) or STM (STepping Motor) technology for extremely fast, almost silent focusing. Some EF lenses have IS (Image Stabilization) technology to reduce camera shake. In addition, most independent manufacturers produce lenses in EOS fitting, including Sigma, Tokina, Tamron, Vivitar and many others.
EOS 35mm cameras are NOT compatible with Canon EF-S lenses which only fit suitable small-sensor digital SLRs, or independent equivalents such as Sigma DC, Tamron Di-II or Tokina DX types which will not cover the full frame. Not suitable for Canon EF-M lenses for the EOS M series digital compact system cameras, or Canon RF lenses for the EOS R series.
Most EOS models (including this one) will work happily with manual lenses and accessories such as mirror lenses, slide copiers, microscope and telescope adapters, with metered manual or aperture priority auto exposure, and stopped down metering.
Please note that Canon EOS cameras are NOT directly compatible with older, manual focus Canon R, FL and FD lenses (or AC autofocus lenses for the T80), though adapters are available (not included) for metered manual or aperture priority auto exposure, with manual diaphragm and stopped down metering. Two types are made, either for close up/macro use only (no glass), or with optical elements to maintain infinity focus, which slightly increases the focal length, and limits compatibility with some lenses.
The EOS cameras are very versatile in that adapters are also available (not included) for many other types of lens and accessory, including M42 screw, Nikon AI (and some AF), Olympus OM, Contax/Yashica, Leica R, T2 (t-mount) and Tamron Adaptall. Medium format adapters are available (NOT included) for Hasselblad, Mamiya 645, Pentacon Six/Kiev 60, Pentax 645 and Pentax 67. In all these cases, infinity focus is maintained without the need for optical elements, and metered manual or aperture priority auto exposure can be used, with manual diaphragm and stopped down metering.
This camera accepts standard 35mm film (not included). This is by far the most popular size with film, processing, printing, scanning and other services still widely available at the time of writing. Colour print (negative) or slide (transparency) and black and white films are currently produced, plus some specialist types. Film speeds are set automatically from ISO 25 to 5000 using DX coding, or manually from ISO 6 to 6400 in 1/3 stops.
