    and SLT digital cameras

This is an original Minolta auto focus zoom lens with multicoated glass and macro close focusing, suitable for all the company's 35mm film auto focus SLR cameras including AF, Dynax, Maxxum or Alpha models, plus Konica Minolta or Sony Alpha digital SLRs and SLTs, but doesn't directly fit NEX or other E-mount models (see below). It is in good condition with lens caps, but has a minor fault – the zoom ring only seems to goes up to around 75mm. Please see the Condition section below for more details.

This focal length range is excellent for general use, covering everything from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 80mm short telephoto/portrait, plus of course all the settings in between. It's the ideal range to keep on your camera, suitable for a huge range of subjects. The zoom ring is large and has a rubber grip for easy handling.

On the Konica Minolta and Sony Alpha APS-C digital SLRs and SLTs this lens gives a field of view equivalent to a 42-112mm zoom, with Super SteadyShot, SteadyShot Inside or Anti-Shake technology to reduce camera shake at slow shutter speeds. This is an excellent range for portraits, glamour, fashion and many other subjects. Full frame coverage on the Sony Alpha A850, A900 and A99 models.

Focusing is automatic or manual down to 0.38m (15 inches) at all focal lengths, for a macro reproduction ratio approaching 1:4 (one quarter life size) at 75mm. The focusing ring has a milled grip, and is easy to use on manual. Automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure and most metering modes except ADI which requires D lenses (see below). Maximum aperture is f/3.5-5.6, and the lens stops down to f/22 for maximum depth of field. As usual with Minolta AF lenses, all aperture settings are controlled from the camera body.

Multicoated (MC) glass for reduced flare against the light, with increased contrast and colour fidelity. Standard 62mm screw thread for filters and other accessories. Optical construction is ten elements in ten groups. The lens is nicely made (in Japan), measures only around 75mm (3 inches) long on the camera at its smallest settings, and a mere 215g. It has a stylish semi-matt silver finish, with black control rings.

An inexpensive zoom lens for Minolta AF, KM and Sony Alpha DSLR or SLT users.

Condition: Excellent++ (8/10), zoom fault
The lens has been checked on our film and digital cameras, the diaphragm stops down smartly and is free of oil, and AF works well. Please note that there's a minor oddity with this lens in that the zoom ring doesn't turn all the way to 80mm. This doesn't affect operation, and checking the lens on our Sony digital camera confirms that the focal length is actually 80mm at maximum zoom. The glass is very clean with no fungus, misting or other serious problems, but just some specks of dust and other tiny marks as usual, which won't affect the pictures at all. Cosmetically it has a smooth finish, clean paintwork and only normal signs of use with some scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The front cap is slightly marked, but both fit well.

No cracks, splits or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged, and overall it's in good shape.
Pictures in this listing show the actual item offered for sale.
Includes Minolta front and rear lens caps

Compatibility

All normal exposure modes work OK (including program), and all metering modes are suitable including multi-pattern and spot. Some ADI modes on newer bodies and flashguns require distance information from the lens, and these modes work only with Minolta D lenses. This doesn't cause a problem in practice as you can use an alternative mode (such as pre-flash TTL) if required.

Minolta AF-fit lenses and accessories are NOT suitable for the Minolta or Konica manual focus SLRs, the APS-format Vectis cameras or the digital RD-3000 (though an adapter was available – please contact us for details), or Dimage digital cameras.

It fits Sony Alpha digital SLR and SLT A-Mount cameras including the A33, A35, A37, A55, A57, A58, A65, A68, A77, A77 II, A99, A99 II, A100, A200, A230, A290, A300, A330, A350, A380, A390, A450, A500, A550, A560, A580, A700, A850 and A900, the Minolta RD-175 (Agfa ActionCam), plus the Konica Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 5D and 7D digital SLR cameras. It doesn't directly fit the E-Mount models, though adapters are available (not included – see below).

Anti-shake features work on suitable digital cameras. The new AF-D (depth) continuous AF mode on the A99 only works with selected Sony lenses, but the AF-S and AF-C modes work as normal.

Minolta AF fit lenses can be used on the Sony NEX-3, NEX-C3, NEX-F3, NEX-5, NEX-5N, NEX-5R, NEX-5T, NEX-6, NEX-7, A7, A7II, A7 III, A7R, A7R II, A7R III, A7S, A7S II, A9, A3000, A5000, A5100, A6000, A6300, A6400, A6500 and QX1 digital compact system cameras with the Sony LA-EA1, LA-EA2, LA-EA3 or LA-EA4 Alpha-to-E-mount adapters (not included). All exposure and metering features work as above, and AF works with the LA-EA2 and LA-EA4. Effective focal lengths are increased by 50 per cent because of the smaller sensor on most models (full frame coverage on the A7 series). Independent adapters are available (not included) to use Minolta AF fit lenses on Canon EOS M and R, Fujifilm X-Mount, Leica CL (2017), M (live view), T, TL and SL, Olympus and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds, Nikon Z, Pentax Q, Samsung NX, Sony NEX and E-Mount digital compact system cameras, with manual diaphragm (the adapter must have an aperture ring) and focusing only.

Some independent lenses don't work properly on digital cameras, but we've checked this one on a Sony Alpha A100 digital, and of course it works fine.
