This flash unit is powerful with a tilt, swivel and zoom head, twin flash tubes and automatic or manual exposure control and a standard hot shoe fitting. It can be used on many mechanical film cameras, Nimslo and Nishika 3D or other stereo models, and even selected digital types such as the popular Fujifilm S9500 or S9600. The flash is in working order, good used condition and supplied with Alkaline batteries. It has a high trigger voltage so please read the full description for more important information.
The flash head can tilt up to 90 degrees vertically and swivel over 300 degrees horizontally, for bounce flash in portrait or landscape orientations. Bounce flash gives softer, more natural lighting than direct flash, and reduces the chance of redeye. A hinged beam splitter is fitted for the softest light, directing light upwards and forwards at the same time with the bounce angle set to 60 degrees. Plus, a secondary flash tube is built in which helps to fill in the shadows when bounce flash is used. It can be switched on or off as desired. The zoom flash head adjusts for wide angle (35mm), normal (50mm) and tele (135mm or longer) lenses, or the equivalents on other formats. This gives wider coverage or greater range as appropriate, and even wider lenses can be used with bounce flash.
This is a powerful flash unit with guide numbers of around 28m (wide angle), 32m (standard) and 40m (tele), or 90 to 130 in feet with ISO 100. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 16m (50ft) with an f/2 standard lens or 14m (45ft) with a 135mm f/2.8 telephoto lens, but as always, actual range will depend on the conditions. Automatic or manual exposure control with three auto ranges. This gives a choice of settings (f/2.8, f/4 or f/8 with ISO 100) for auto shots to suit the subject, offering ranges up to approximately 11m (37ft), 8m (26ft) and 4m (13ft) respectively with a standard lens (less at wide angle, more at telephoto). Thyristor circuitry for reduced recycling times (or to keep up with auto winders) and more flashes per set of batteries at close distances. Full power manual operation is also available. The auto sensor on the front of the flash remains pointed at the subject even if the flash is tilted or swivelled, retaining auto exposure for bounce flash.
A very comprehensive control panel on the rear includes film speeds from ASA (ISO) 25 to 400 and DIN 15 to 27, apertures from f/1.2 to f/32 and distances from 1.2 to 19 meters. A ready light, test button and auto check light are provided, plus an auto power saving system shuts down if the flash isn't used, to save battery power. This Fotomatic 700TFZA flash unit measures around 135mm (5.3") tall on the camera when set for direct flash, and weighs approximately 300g (10.5oz) without batteries. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, which are inexpensive and easily obtainable, and disposable alkaline (included) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used.
This is a useful flash unit for many mechanical film cameras, some 3D models and selected digital types.
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
This flash is in fully working order and good used condition. It charges and fires correctly, and all features work properly (checked on our Fujifilm S9500 digital camera). Cosmetically it shows just the usual scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish. The beam splitter is a little loose (but secure) and foam pads have been fitted to reduce the problem somewhat. Some of the ASA/DIN markings on the rear are worn, but still usable. The batteries seem to fit rather loosely (a removable holder was originally included which is not supplied here) but stay in place securely once the cover is closed. The contacts are clean and work fine.
No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in good shape.
Includes 4x Alkaline AA batteries. Pictures in this listing show the actual flash offered for sale.
Compatibility
This flash has the standard accessory shoe fitting with electrical connection, which fits cameras with a hot shoe. These connections have been fitted to cameras for generations, including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even many modern digital cameras.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This type of flash was originally designed for manual (mechanical) cameras, and has a trigger voltage of around 40-100v+ (variable). This shouldn't be used with some modern electronic, AF or digital cameras, which typically expect a voltage of around 6v to 24v (ISO 10330 standard).
Older cameras with a mechanical shutter (working at all speeds without batteries) should be fine, and this includes many classic SLR models such as the Agfa Selectronic 1, Braun SR2000, Canon EX Auto, FTb, TX, Carena ICS 201, ICS 301M, KS, KSM 1 & 2, SFL2, SRH760, SRH1001, Chinon CM-3, CM-4, CM-4S, CM-5, CM-7, CS, CS-4, CX, M-1, Cimar DZ2-1, Contax S2, S2B, Cosina C1, C1s, CT-1 series, Hi-Lite 402, 405, STL 1000, PM-1, Edixa CX 5, Exakta EDX 2 & 3, KE 4 & 5, Twin TL, Fujica ST601, ST605, ST605N, ST701 (hot shoe models only), ST705, ST705W, ST801, STX-1, STX-1N, STX-2, Haking HG1, Kodak Retina Reflex IV, Konica Autoreflex T3 (with hot shoe clip), T3N, T4, TC, TC-X, Leicaflex SL2, Mamiya 528TL, Auto XTL, Auto X-1000 (plus some MSX and DSX models with hot shoe), Minolta SR-T 100X (200), 101b (201, SR101), 303 (102, Super), 303b (202, SR505, SR505s), MC, MC-II, SC and SC-II, Miranda Auto Sensorex EE, EE-2, RE-II, Sensorex II, MS-1, MS-1N, MS-1 Super, Nikkormat FT2, FT3, Nikon FM, FM2, FM2N, FM2T, FM10, Olympus FTL, OM-1 and OM-1N (with flash shoe), OM-3 series, OM2000, Peafowl DF.1, Pentax K1000, KM, KX, MX, Spotmatic II, IIa and F, Petri FA-1, FTE, FTEE, FT 500, FT 1000, FT II, FTX, TTL, GX-1, GX-1 Super, MF-101, MF-101A, Phenix DC20, DC303 series, DC901, DN60, DN66, Praktica L, LB, LLC, LTL, MTL, DTL and PLC series, Ricoh Auto TLS EE, KR-5 series, Singlex II, SLX 500, XR-1, XR-1S, Rolleiflex SL350, SL35M, Rony RS1, Seagull DF-2, DF-103, Sigma Mark 1, Topcon RE200, RE300, RM300, Vivitar 220/SL, 250/SL, 400/SL, V335, V2000, V3000, V3800N, V4000, XV-1, Voigtlander VSL1, Yashica FFT, FX-2, FX-3 series, FX-7, TL, TL-E, TL-Electro, TL-Super, Zeiss Ikon SL706, Zenit 122, 212K, 312M, ET plus some TTL models with a hot shoe, etc. Many mechanical 35mm film compact cameras are also suitable, as long as they have either manual exposure control or a flashmatic feature for external flash units, plus a hot shoe.
Digital camera compatibility
Some digital cameras specify higher voltages and we've checked it on our own Fujifilm S9500 (which accepts up to 250v), where it works well. Other Fuji models such as the S602, S602 Pro, FX6900 and FX4900 (350v), S9000, S9100, S9600, S20 Pro and S7000 (250v) are also suitable (down to 35mm zoom or with bounce flash), though newer models may not be. If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment.
Please note that it's NOT suitable for cameras with a non-standard flash shoe such as many Minolta or Konica Minolta Dynax, Maxxum, Alpha or Vectis, many Sony Alpha digital, Nikon 1 series digital and other similar cameras.
3D and Stereo Compatibility
With suitable 3D or stereo cameras this twin flash is ideal for many indoor subjects as it can light the foreground subject and background more equally, which helps the 3D, stereo or wigglegram effect look more realistic. The twin flash feature should be set to on for the foreground, and the bounce angle adjusted to illuminate the background. On the Nimslo 3D Camera the auto mode should be set to red (ISO 200) or green (ISO 400). It then works in a similar way to the company's Opti-Lite flash (though it doesn't indicate flash ready status in the viewfinder) but with longer range. On the Nishika 3D models it should be set to yellow (ISO 100) or red (ISO 400). It then works in a similar way to the company's Twin Light N3000/3010 flashes but with longer range and auto exposure. In both cases you can use the flash's test button and auto check light to confirm correct exposure before taking the picture. The flash can also be used on many older stereo film cameras with an X-synchronised hot shoe including the FED Stereo, Holga 135 TIM, etc.
