A quality auto/manual electronic flash for mechanical film cameras (and selected digital models) with standard hot shoe and synchro cable fittings

  • A quality Agfa flash unit
  • Powerful guide no. 34m
  • Tilting head for bounce
  • Sliding wide angle diffuser
  • 2 auto exposure modes
  • Thyristor for fast recycling
  • Full power manual option
  • Standard hot shoe fitting
  • For mechanical cameras
  • For some digital models
    (trigger voltage 80v+)
  • With instruction manual
  • Includes synchro cable
  • Includes AA batteries

Agfa was one of the top names in photographic equipment and this Agfatronic 341 CBS S-Computer flashgun is powerful with a guide number of 34m, tilting head for bounce flash, built-in wide angle diffuser, two thyristor auto modes plus full power manual, and a standard hot shoe fitting plus synchro cable. It has quite a high trigger voltage so it's only recommended for older mechanical cameras or some modern ones that can accept higher voltages including several popular Fujifilm models including the S9500 and S9600 (please read the full description for more information). It's in fully working order, used condition, supplied with the instruction manual, synchro cable and Alkaline batteries.

The flash head can tilt internally up to 90 degrees for bounce flash, which gives softer, more natural lighting than direct flash and reduces the chance of redeye. The auto sensor on the front of the flash remains pointed at the subject even if the flash is tilted, retaining auto exposure for bounce flash. A built-in sliding wide angle diffuser works for lenses down to 28mm (or the equivalent on other formats), and even wider lenses can be used with bounce flash.

The guide number is a powerful 34m (110ft) with ISO 100. Two auto exposure modes are available, plus manual. The auto modes offer ranges of 0.8 to 8.5m (2.6 to 27.5ft) and 0.5 to 4.25m (1.6 to 13.8ft) at f/4 and f/8 respectively with ISO 100. Thyristor circuitry for reduced recycling times (or to keep up with auto winders) and more flashes per set of batteries at close distances. In manual mode, the range depends on the film speed and lens maximum aperture. With an f/2 lens and ISO 100 the theoretical maximum range is up to around 17m (55ft), though as with all flashguns the actual range will depend on the conditions. The range is slightly reduced with the wide angle diffuser in place.

A comprehensive control panel on the rear includes film speeds from ASA (ISO) 25 to 400 and DIN 15 to 27, apertures from f/2 to f/22 and distances from 1 to 10 meters. Auto apertures are clearly indicated with colour coded indexes for each setting, plus wide angle ranges. A combined ready light/test button is provided, plus an auto check light to confirm correct exposure. The flash is nicely made with a solid yet lightweight body, measures approximately 155x76x53mm (6.1x3x2.1") and weighs around 280g (9.8oz) without batteries. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, and disposable alkaline (included) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used.

An excellent flashgun for many older cameras, and several newer ones.

Condition: Excellent++ (8/10)
The flash is in generally good condition, fully working order and has been checked on suitable cameras. The controls and movements work positively (the rotating wide diffuser is quite stiff), and all features work as expected. Cosmetically it shows normal signs of use with some scratches, scrapes and paint wear here and there (please see our pictures). The battery contacts are marked with signs of previous corrosion, but have been cleaned and work fine. The instructions are complete (in multiple languages including English and German) and legible, while the synchro cable has been tested.

No cracks, splits or other damage, and overall it's in good shape.
Includes instruction manual, synchro cable and 4x Alkaline AA batteries .
Pictures in this listing show the actual flash offered for sale.

Compatibility
This flash has the once-standard hot shoe and flash lead, which fits cameras with a hot shoe connection or accessory shoe and PC flash sync socket. These connections have been fitted to cameras for generations, including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even many modern digital cameras. The lead can plug into slave units or extension leads (not included) for multiple flash setups. Many other cameras without an accessory shoe can be used with an extra flash bracket (not included).

IMPORTANT NOTE: This type of flash was originally designed for manual (mechanical) cameras, and has a trigger voltage of around 80v+ (variable). This shouldn't be used with some modern electronic, AF or digital cameras, which typically expect a voltage of around 6v to 24v (ISO 10330 standard).

Older cameras with a mechanical shutter (working at all speeds without batteries) should be fine, and this includes many classic SLR models such as the Agfa Agfamatic Reflex, Optima Reflex and Selectronic 1, Alpa Si 2000, Braun SR2000, Canon EX EE, EX Auto, FP, FT, FTb, FX, Pellix, TL, TLb, TX, Carena ICS 201, ICS 301M, KS, KSM 1 & 2, SFL2, SRH760, SRH1001, Centon K100, Chinon CM-3, CM-4, CM-4S, CM-5, CM-7, CS, CS-4, CX, M-1, Cimar DZ2-1, Contax S2, S2B, Cosina C1, C1s, CT-1 series, Hi-Lite 402, 405, STL 1000, PM-1, Edixa CX 5, Exakta EDX 2 & 3, KE 4 & 5, Twin TL, Fujica ST601, ST605, ST605N, ST701, ST705, ST705W, ST801, STX-1, STX-1N, Fuji STX-2, Kiev 17, 19 and 19M, Kodak Retina Reflex, S, III, IV, Konica Autoreflex Autoreflex A, T, T2, A3 (with accessory clip), T3 (with hot shoe clip), T3N, T4, TC, TC-X, Leicaflex, SL, SL2, Mamiya 528TL, Auto XTL, Auto X-1000 (plus MSX and DSX models with accessory shoe or hot shoe), Minolta SRM, Minolta SR-T 100X (200), 101b (201, SR101), 303 (102, Super), 303b (202, SR505, SR505s), MC, MC-II, SC and SC-II, Miranda Auto Sensorex EE, EE-2, RE-II, Sensorex II, MS-1, MS-1N, Nikkorex 35, Zoom 35, Nikkormat FT2, FT3, Nikon Auto 35, FM, FM2, FM2N, FM2T, FM10, Olympus FTL, OM-1 and OM-1N (with flash shoe), OM-3 series, OM2000, Peafowl DF.1, Pentax K1000, KM, KX, MX, Spotmatic II, IIa and F, Pentina series, Petri FA-1, FTE, FTEE, FT, FT II, FT 500, FT 1000, FTX, TTL, Petriflex 7, Phenix DC20, DC303 series, DC901, DN60, DN66, Praktica L, LB, LLC, LTL, MTL, DTL and PLC series, Quantaray D2-RZ, Ricoh Auto TLS EE, KR-5 series, Singlex II, SLX 500, TLS 401, XR-1, XR-1S, Rolleiflex SL350, SL35M, Rony RS1, Seagull DF-2, DF-103, Seama DC-1, Sigma Mark 1, Topcon RE200, RE300, RM300, RE Auto, Uni, Unirex, Wink S Mirror, Vivitar 220/SL, 250/SL, 400/SL, V335, V2000, V3000, V3800N, V4000, XV-1, Voigtlander Bessamatic CS, VSL1, Yashica FFT, FX-2, FX-3 series, FX-7, TL-E, TL-Super and Pentamatic models, Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super series, Contarex, Super and Professional, Icarex 35, 35S, 35 CS, SL706, Zenit 10, 11 and 12 series, 19, 122, 212K, 312M, 412 series, ET, TTL, etc.

Many mechanical 35mm film compact cameras are also suitable, as long as they have either manual exposure control or a flashmatic feature for external flash units, plus a hot shoe or accessory shoe and synchro cable socket. The Agfa Selectronic Sensor (and S), Optima Sensor 335, 535, 1035 and 1535 are all compatible, as well as many others. The Agfa Optima 200 and 500 Sensor can be used for direct flash only.

Digital camera compatibility
Some digital cameras specify higher voltages and we've checked it on our own Fujifilm S9500 (which accepts up to 250v), where it works well. Other Fuji models such as the S602, S602 Pro, FX6900 and FX4900 (350v), S9000, S9100, S9600, S20 Pro and S7000 (250v) are also suitable, though newer models may not be. If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment.

Please note that it's NOT suitable for cameras with a non-standard flash shoe such as many Minolta or Konica Minolta Dynax, Maxxum, Alpha or Vectis, many Sony Alpha digital, Nikon 1 series digital and other similar cameras.
