This Rollei 134REB flash unit is powerful, versatile, and can be used with many cameras with a standard hot shoe or flash sync socket. It's ideal for many mechanical 35mm and medium format models (but see the Compatibility section of the full description for important information, as it has quite a high trigger voltage and negative polarity). This one's in good used condition, fully working order, supplied with instructions (copy), synchro cable and batteries.
The flash head can be rotated to aim upwards by 60 degrees for bounce flash, which gives softer, more natural lighting than direct flash, reduces the chance of redeye, and spreads the light over a wider area for wide angle lenses.
This is a powerful flash unit with a guide number of 34m (112 feet) at ISO 100. It offers auto or manual exposure control, with two auto ranges (f/5.6 or f/11 with ISO 100) for auto shots to suit the subject, with ranges from 0.4m (16 inches) to 6m (20 feet) respectively. The auto sensor on the front of the flash remains pointed at the subject even if the flash is tilted, retaining auto exposure for bounce flash. Thyristor circuitry for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. Full power manual operation is also available. Comprehensive scales on the rear include film speeds from ISO 12 to 1600 (DIN 12 to 33 for German users), apertures from f/1.4 to f/22 and distances from 1.5 to 20 meters (5 to 70 feet). A ready light and test switch are provided, and the latter also acts as a lock for the synchro cable.
Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, which are inexpensive and easily obtainable – disposable alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used. There's a captive, hinged battery cover which can't be easily dropped or lost. The flash is nicely made (in Singapore), measures around 140mm (5.5 inches) tall on the camera, and weighs under 300g without batteries. The base of the flash has a standard 1/4-inch thread so it can be mounted directly onto a tripod, clamp or other support, though the thread is quite close to the hot shoe (see picture) and larger tripod heads won't fit.
A useful flash unit, especially for Rollei users and collectors.
Condition: Excellent++ (8/10), some play
This flash is in fully working order and good used condition. It charges and fires correctly (checked on suitable cameras), and all features work properly. Cosmetically it shows just the usual surface scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish, plus the shoe has a little play and is slightly loose on some cameras (our Rollei was OK, Praktica and Fujifilm less so). The battery contacts are clean with no signs of corrosion, and work fine. The instruction manual is a copy but complete (in English) and quite legible, while the synchro cable has been tested.
No cracks, splits or deep scratches, and overall it's in good shape.
Pictures in this listing show the actual flash offered for sale.
Includes synchro cable, plus 4x Alkaline AA batteries
Compatibility
This flash has the once-standard hot shoe and flash lead, which fits cameras with a hot shoe connection or PC flash sync socket. These connections have been fitted to cameras for generations, including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even many modern digital cameras. The lead can plug into slave units or extension leads (not included) for multiple flash setups.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This type of flash was originally designed for manual (mechanical) cameras, and has a trigger voltage of around 85v (variable), and negative polarity. This shouldn't be used with some modern electronic, AF or digital cameras, which typically expect a voltage of around 6v to 24v (ISO standard) and positive polarity.
Older cameras with a mechanical shutter (working at all speeds without batteries) should be fine, and this includes many classic SLR models such as the Agfa Selectronic 1, Alpa Si 2000, Braun SR2000, Canon EX EE, EX Auto, FP, FT, FTb, FX, Pellix, TL, TLb, TX, Carena ICS 201, ICS 301M, KS, KSM 1 & 2, SFL2, SRH760, SRH1001, Centon K100, Chinon CM-3, CM-4, CM-4S, CM-5, CM-7, CS, CS-4, CX, M-1, Cimar DZ2-1, Contax S2, S2B, Cosina C1, C1s, CT-1 series, Hi-Lite 402, 405, STL 1000, PM-1, Edixa CX 5, Exakta EDX 2 & 3, KE 4 & 5, Twin TL, Fujica ST601, ST605, ST605N, ST701, ST705, ST705W, ST801, STX-1, STX-1N, Fuji STX-2, GAF L-CM, L-CS and LC-X, Hanimex 35 SL and DR-1, Kiev 17, 19 and 19M, Kodak Retina Reflex, S, III, IV, Konica Domirex, Autoreflex A, T, T2, A3 (with accessory clip), T3 (with hot shoe clip), T3N, T4, TC, TC-X, Leicaflex, SL, SL2, Mamiya 528TL, Auto XTL, Auto X-1000 (plus MSX and DSX models with accessory shoe or hot shoe), Minolta SR-M, SR-T 100, 100X (200), 101, 101b (201, SR101), 303 (102, Super), 303b (202, SR505, SR505s), MC, MC-II, SC and SC-II, Miranda Auto Sensorex EE, EE-2, RE-II, Sensorex II, MS-1, MS-1N, Nikkorex 35, Zoom 35, Nikkormat FT2, FT3, Nikon Auto 35, FM, FM2, FM2N, FM2T, FM10, Olympus FTL, OM-1 and OM-1N (with flash shoe), OM-3 series, OM2000, Peafowl DF.1, Pentax K1000, KM, KX, MX, Spotmatic II, IIa and F, Pentina series, Petri FA-1, FTE, FTEE, FT, FT II, FT 500, FT 1000, FTX, TTL, Petriflex 7, Phenix DC20, DC303 series, DC901, DN60, DN66, Praktica L, LB, LLC, LTL, MTL, DTL and PLC series, Quantaray D2-RZ, Regula Reflex 2000 CTL, Ricoh Auto TLS EE, KR-5 series, Singlex II, SLX 500, TLS 401, XR-1, XR-1S, Ringfoto Reflex, Rolleiflex SL350, SL35M, Rony RS1, Seagull DF-2, DF-103, Seama DC-1, Sigma Mark 1, Topcon RE200, RE300, RM300, RE Auto, Uni, Unirex, Wink S Mirror, Vivitar 220/SL, 250/SL, 400/SL, V335, V2000, V3000, V3800N, V4000, XV-1, Voigtlander Bessamatic CS, VSL1, Yashica FFT, FX-2, FX-3 series, FX-7, TL-E, TL-Electro, TL-Super and Pentamatic models, Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super series, Contarex, Super and Professional, Icarex 35, 35S, 35 CS, SL706, Zenit 10, 11 and 12 series, 19, 122, 212K, 312M, 412 series, ET, TTL, etc. Many mechanical 35mm film compact cameras are also suitable, as long as they have manual exposure control plus a hot shoe or accessory shoe and synchro cable socket.
If in doubt, check with your camera manufacturer for the safe voltage for your equipment.
